Goodwill's 2014 Annual Report is Now Available Online

Goodwill Industries of the Valleys has made an overwhelming impact on the communities in its 31 count
y, 13 city service area and the individuals who live there. In 2014, not only did Goodwill serve thousands of individuals and place 3,662 in competitive community employment, but it also helped the environment by keeping over 13.5 million pounds out of area landfills.

This year Goodwill went "green" with the annual report by making it an interactive online document. Along with reading about the Graduate of the Year, DJ Ferguson, you can hear him tell how Goodwill helped him get back to work after dropping out of school at sixteen to take care of his mom and grandmother.

Goodwill GoodGuides' Youth Mentoring Program Participates in "Summer Lunch and Fun"

(Roanoke)

While out of school for the summer, children 18 and younger, from low income households, will be provided with free lunches through the YMCA of Roanoke Valley Summer Food Program. Through this program, the YMCA Express at Gainsboro was able to partner with he Gainsboro Library, the CAFE, Goodwill Industries of the Valleys, and the N Zone to provide "Summer Lunch and Fun" program to youth in Northwest Roanoke. Goodwill GoodGuides Youth Mentoring Program will be partnering in this community outreach to help keep kids active and healthy while out of school for the summer.

The youth in GoodGuides will be serving as interns in the program by reading to the younger children, as well as providing crafts, and summer activities. They have broken down the weeks into themes that will encourage children to explore different subjects through reading. Their goals are to help the youth comprehend what they read and increase SOL scores.

"Several of our GoodGuides Mentees were part of the Gainsboro YMCA's Teen Leadership Club for several months, where they learned skills to become effective leaders," states Nicole Ross, GoodGuides Program Manager. "Giving them the opportunity to utilize these new skills is something we look forward to as we encourage our youth to achieve  excellence. Seeing so many of our mentees that struggled with literacy when we began and to now be able to give literacy back to the younger population is our way of paying it forward and supporting our community."

The GoodGuides Youth Mentoring program serves youth between the ages of 12 and 17. The youth benefit from the guidance of adult mentors that help them build career plans and skills to prepare for school completion, post-secondary training and productive work.

The Goodwill GoodGuides program began in 2009 with a $19.1 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice Office of Juvenile Justice Delinquency and Delinquency Prevention. Goodwill Industries International dispersed that original grant to 56 independent Goodwill agencies in 38 states around the country.

Goodwill hosts a variety of Job Seeker Services to help individuals in the community get back to work. Among these services are Job Fairs that are held at several different locations in its service area. These fairs are primarily solo events that feature one employer at a time and they are free and open to the public.

"The job fairs we hold at Goodwill serve a multi-fold purpose, sort of a "one size fits all," states Karen Jackson, Jobs Campus Coordinator. "They build and strengthen partner relationships between businesses and Goodwill, and offer local employers a no-cost opportunity to recruit and directly interface with prospective employees. The real winners, however, are the job seekers, often discouraged by submitting impersonal online job applications, now given the chance to get their faces, voices, and personalities in front hiring managers. Many times as result of the connection initiated by the weekly fairs held at Goodwill, a match is made, satisfying both the employer and soon-to-be employee. There are few words sweeter than, 'I got the job!'"
