ArtWalk, when Spartanburg art galleries and museums stay open late, will be May 21, 5-9 p.m.
This is a longstanding community event on the third Thursday of each month, when art museums
and galleries stay open late so patrons can see what is new on the local art scene.
Most of the galleries provide wine-and-cheese type refreshments and hold receptions for their
current exhibits. The participants for May will include the following.

Spartanburg Art Museum, in Chapman Cultural Center at 200 East Saint John Street,
will showcase its current exhibits: Furnace and Flame and Vintage Perfume Bottles.
Furnace and Flame is about 33 pieces of studio glass art, created by artists in Western North Carolina,
and Vintage Perfume Bottles is about 150 perfume bottles collected by local collector Jay Kaplan. 864.582.7616. SpartanburgArtMuseum.org.

Artists' Guild of Spartanburg Gallery, in Chapman Cultural Center at 200 East Saint John Street,
will feature the work of member Scott Quinn. This exhibit has mostly wall-hangings, some of which are

Art Lounge, at 500 E. Main Street, will feature Dan Becker with his small works of art of wildlife and nature. Becker works with a palette knife to create his paintings giving his subject matter a more abstract impression. 864.804.6566. ArtLounge1.com.

West Main Artists Co-Op, at 582 W. Main Street, will feature Joan Wheatley. Wheatley is a miniature specialist working with clay, paint and natural products. Her inspiration is everyday life and nature using a whimsical approach. Wheatley has trained in the folk art of Hindeloopen, which she has since miniaturized. The Johnson Collection Gallery, at 100 Dunbar Street, Suite 203, will feature "Beauty and Pattern in Common Things." This exhibit celebrates women artists and their achievements, featuring works by Josephine Couper, Elaine de Kooning, Marie Hull, Adele Lemm, Edith London, Blondelle Malone, Corrie McCallum, Willie Betty Newman, Par Passlof, Gladys Nelson Smith, Mary Leath Thomas, Helen Turner and Catherine Wiley. 864.594.5834. Carolina Gallery, at 523 W. Main Street, will feature Keith Spencer and his exhibit "Beneath the Surface," which runs May 5-June 20. Spencer's work has a creative boldness and is "full of life and energy." The result is a striking range of both figurative and landscape paintings. His landscapes are frequently done in the alla prima tradition (one sitting) and will often include the mountainous upstate of South Carolina as well as the low country surrounding Charleston.
