Amazing Tails:

Making Connections with PAWS

"Chien and I visit at the VA. There is one veteran in particular with whom Chien is very comfortable.  He finds his way into the Sergeant's lap and will sit there for as long as he can. On the day pictured, the art class theme was using various magic markers. So Chien became part of the Sergeant's project.

"It is amazing how, from Day One, Chien had 'his job' at the VA figured out. He is shy by nature, but is quite at home there. He walked in that first day, stood up on the wheel of a wheel chair, and if patted or invited, climbed up to find a lap - which isn't always easy with amputees, colostomy bags, and whatever other medical related items may be about. Chien is comfortable riding the halls in a wheel chair. He is patient and comforting; he doesn't "say" much, but is a nice, soft coated presence.

"I am happy that PAWS has afforded me and Chien the opportunity to be a part of the Vets'  lives."

Donate While You Shop

Jo Cotterman, PAWS Member, recently reminded us in the office that PAWS is able to benefit from Amazon purchases through Amazon Smile.

Did you know that Amazon will donate 0.5% of the price of your eligible AmazonSmile purchases to PAWS for People whenever you shop on AmazonSmile?

Thanks for the reminder, Jo!
Tidbit Corner: Teach Your Cat to Walk on a Leash
"Teaching  your cat to walk on a harness and leash is a great way to let your cat enjoy the outdoors while ensuring his safety. Outdoor excursions can reduce obesity and boredom-related behavior problems that many under exercised indoor cats develop. Leash training also comes in handy during trips to the vet and other necessary travel.

"Most cats can be trained to walk on a harness and leash. Kittens are naturally more accepting of this new experience, but older cats can be trained with patience. Proceed in small steps, rewarding each bit of progress. Start harness training indoors so that your cat's comfortable with it before you venture outside." Click to read more from the ASPCA

Introducing New PAWS Staff

Welcome to Pat Walp, PAWS new Training Coordinator.

Most of Pat's professional career has been working in the community as a teacher, counselor and equine assisted growth and learning specialist. She has one son and one grandson who are both "horse and dog" crazy! Her leisure time activities include traveling, horse shows, fishing, and loving her therapy companion, DeeDee.

"With the first Friday in July falling at the beginning of the 4th of July weekend, the town of Elkton's downtown merchants have set July 10 as the next First Friday celebration. As part of the festivities, the Elkton Alliance is planning a special "Paws on the Pavement" event. It will run from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"The downtown merchants have partnered with Paws for People, a non-profit agency committed to providing therapeutic visits to any person in the community who would benefit from interaction with a well-trained, loving pet. They want to bring an event downtown involving dogs to help get the word out about their organization. Since the Cecil County Arts Council is opening its "It's a Dog's Life" exhibit, the Alliance thought this would be a great opportunity to showcase Paws for People..."

Shining Stars: Julie Wilgen & Solomon

"The last time I took Solomon to Millcroft we were able to do both a group activity and individual visitations.  As usual, the residents loved our visit and wanted to pet and talk at length about their own beloved pets so we stayed for three and a half hours. It was terrific and more relaxing since I did not have to squeeze our visit in between my multiple other duties!

"The students at the University of Delaware enjoy Solomon when he is on campus for De-Stress sessions."

"Both young and old seem to appreciate the value of 'Man's Best Friend' as soul mate and companion during these crazy times in the world!
