Briefing on Yemen Crisis

The Council for MENA Affairs is pleased to invite you to the first session of its Policy Lunch series in 2015.

Looking at the recent political developments in the Middle East region and especially the Arabian Peninsula, the armed conflict and war situation in Yemen is increasingly critical, but it is not taking the core attention of the global or the regional powers. The humanitarian situation is reaching an alarming level that reflects badly on the civilian population and leaving them with no essential services, particularly children and elder people.

In response to this tragedy, the latest EU Council Conclusion highlighted the importance to reach an immediate cessation of violence between the conflicted parties and the need for a quick intervention of the UN to undertake efforts in order to resume inclusive negotiations. In addition, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) initiative and other relevant road maps, proposed for Yemen, were crucial to avoid region-wide crisis.

To provide us with an update of the on ground situation, and an insight into the challenges faced by EU to address these issues, ForMENA is delighted to welcome: Mr. John O'Rourke, Head of Division - Arabian Peninsula, Iran and Iraq – European External Action Service.
