Legislative Update: AB 292 and AB 1240

on Suspense in Assembly Appropriations

All kids deserve healthy meals in order to learn, grown, and achieve at their fullest potential. Help us make this a reality for California kids!

AB 292 (Santiago), the Time to Eat bill, was placed on suspense April 15. The Breakfast After the Bell bill, AB 1240 (Bonta & Thurmond), was placed on suspense May 13.

A bill is placed on suspense if the committee's fiscal analysis shows a cost to the State. On May 29, the Assembly Appropriations Committee will vote on all of the bills in the suspense file. If a bill is voted out of suspense, it proceeds to the Assembly floor for a vote by the entire house. CFPA will work with committee members and staff to ensure that AB 292 and AB 1240 live on!

For more details, read the fiscal analyses from the Appropriations Committee and visit CFPA's bill pages.

In the News: Assemblymember Bonta & Jeff Bridges Pen an Op-Ed on School Breakfast
Assemblymember Rob Bonta, joint author of AB 1240, and Jeff Bridges, actor and national spokesperson for the No Kid Hungry Campaign, coauthored an op-ed discussing the great need to connect more kids with a nutritious school breakfast. The op-ed highlights the academic and health benefits of school breakfast. Calling AB 1240 a practical solution for students and schools, Bonta and Bridges say:

If we want our students to be successful, we must provide them with the basic building blocks of a quality education. There is nothing more basic than keeping hunger out of our schools. Every child deserves to start the day well nourished and ready to learn.

The Op-Ed appeared in eight Southern California news outlets, including the Los Angeles Daily News.
