Navajo

The Navajo mission team left on June 6 th for a two week construction mission in the Navajo Nation. We flew into Albuquerque and drove to Chinle, AZ. The team was based at Our Lady of Fatima in Chinle. We have worked out of this parish for many years. There is no shortage of work so we anticipate returning for a long time. We have developed a strong relationship with the Navajo people. We share our time and spirit with these people and they return the gift. We had 19 team members go. Our projects ranged from a few minutes to several days of work. Here's short list of some of our projects:

Repair roof of church
Repair bathroom fixtures in church hall
Work in food pantry
Install fans in parish hogan
Maintenance on swamp coolers (several sites)
Repair chairs and kneelers
Work on addition for Ann Tso (wife of Sam Tso, Navajo code talker)
Work on addition for Luther Scott
Install fence for Phyllis Bekay
Repair barbed wire fence (God's country)
Removed two trees
Removed a small structure (we putted out every nail and saved them)

That's the short list:)

Other cool things we did:

Visit Canyon De Chelly Nation Park
Driving tour of Navajo Nation
Ate fry bread (yum)
Share stories with the Navajo people
Watch Stanley Cup (Go Hawks)

If this sounds interesting come with us next year. The date are June 4th through June 17th.

University returns from Bolivia

The University Mission team has return from Sucre, Bolivia. They worked in several location in the Sucre area.

When a mission team arrives in the country they are going to work in the sense of welcome depends on the relationship built with the people the mission team is to serve. First time a mission enters a country the relationship is new and interactions tend to be formal and cautious. As teams return yearly the welcome becomes more friendly and welcoming. This year it was clear the work of previous mission teams had created a wonderful relationship with the people. This allowed work in day care and construction.

Again the team work at Ciruelitos, a daycare for children of some really poor families in Sucre.  It's in pretty bad shape financially, but since our first visit there last year, things seem to have improved a little bit.  Of course we hope that will continue.

The mission team also worked at the home of Tomas. They worked on completing a bano (bathroom). Something as a basic as a bathroom can be simple dignity for the people of Sucre. Many people don't have a bathroom or if they do it can be a dilapidated structure of a few boards and a tarp.

Of course a lot of good work happens during these trips- food, clothing, special projects, etc.- important things all of them.  But equally important is the impact on the participants. It is always a privilege to witness the ways in which all the participants are effected by the friendships they develop, the kindness and hospitality shown to them by the families and staff at the sites, and the ways in which they think deeply about the experience.

Philippines

The Philippines Mission is starting up again. Thursday July 9th is the information meeting at the Blanchette Catholic Center in Crest Hill. We're at the corner of Weber Road and Division. The meeting starts at 7:00pm. We will overview the mission and share stories of mission. We are in need of doctors, surgeons, anesthesiologist, and nurses. We also need people for construction and community outreach.

The medical team again will provide surgical and clinical care for the people. People come from areas of the Philippines where there a little if any medical care. It's not unusual for people to travel 8 - 10 hours on a variety of vehicles to get to the medical team.

With all the typhoons of recent years the need for construction is great. There are a variety of projects waiting for us to get started on. Everything from single family homes to a village. We hope to start our year around construction project with this mission.

Community outreach will be working with villages around the Borongan area. They will bring food and social services to people. They work with children on educational projects. Being a grandma or grandpa to these kids can be the most important thing we do on mission.

We leave on January 29th and return to O'Hare on February 13th, 2016. Come join us!

Faith Promise Dinner

Our Faith Promise Dinner is fast approaching. Please put November 6th on your Calendar. This is your opportunity to help missions continue to reach out and touch people in need at our mission partners sites. Please help pass the word to everyone you know. It's a night of storytelling. Stories of how mission has touch lives. Hear about the building project at Tomas home. Curious about what happens at the hospitals while we're on mission, stop by the Faith Promise Dinner. Do you know what a water women is? Come to the Faith Promise Dinner and find out. You may be one. Which University team has the biggest team? Then you'll know if you come to the Faith Promise Dinner.
