BFA presents our 2014-2015 Artist-in-Residence Brendan V. Ryan in a recital brimming with expressive art songs.  The April 4th program includes works by Debussy, Ravel, Corigliano, and a WORLD PREMIERE song cycle by Rumsey.  The audience will enjoy the beautiful artistry of this exciting up-and-coming flutist!
 
Mr. Ryan was a First Prize winner in the 2013 Alexander Buono International Flute Competition and was thusly offered a solo performance in Carnegie Hall.  Mr. Ryan is an Associate Member for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago's 2014-2015 season, and is a substitute Principal Flutist for the Lexington Symphony Orchestra under conductor Jonathan McPhee.  Mr. Ryan graduated with a MM degree from UT Austin where he studied with Marianne Gedigian.  He received his BM from the USC Thornton School of Music where he studied with Jim Walker.  He also spent a year at Carnegie Mellon University where he studied with Jeanne Baxtresser and Alberto Almarza. Prior to his college studies, he trained for 5 years with Boston flutist Judy Grant.  Mr. Ryan has been a Yale Fellow at the Norfolk Chamber Music Festival, performed in the Aspen Music Festival, and was recently selected for the 2015 Sarasota Chamber Music Festival.    
Kate Fruchterman, Soprano
BFA welcomes soprano Kate Fruchterman to Boston!  Ms. Fruchterman is a native of Palo Alto, California.  She has most recently been seen as Suor Genovieffa in Mannes Opera's production of Suor Angelica in NY.  Other recent roles include Cleopatra (Giulio Cesare), Corinna (Il Viaggio a Reims), Despina (Cosí Fan Tutte), and Pamina (Die Zauberflöte).  An active recitalist, she has performed in Los Angeles, Kansas City, and the San Francisco Bay Area.  This spring, she will finish her Masters degree at Mannes College in Manhattan.  As a winner of the 2015 Opera Foundation Scholarship, she will be relocating to Turin, Italy, where she will be singing with the Teatro Regio di Torino for the 2015-16 season.    .
Christina Wright-Ivanova, Piano
Dr. Christina Wright-Ivanova is the Staff Pianist at Boston University .   She is described as "a perfect partner" by Klassik Newsletter Berlin and a "brilliant collaborative pianist" by Wiener Zeitung (Vienna) .  She has performed throughout the United States, Canada, Europe, South America, and China as a recital partner and a soloist.  Recordings on ARS Produktion, New Dynamic Records (flute/piano), and MSR Classics.  To learn more about Dr. Wright-Ivanova and to check out her performance schedule, visit her website.
Special World Premiere  
Award-winning composer Brandon Scott Rumsey created a new song cycle, Remembering the Clouds, specifically for these performers and this BFA event! The song cycle is written for flute, soprano, & piano and revolves around the prose of Irish poets both past and present, with texts by W.B. Yeats, Leanne O'Sullivan, Geoffrey Nutter, and Caitríona O'Reilly.   We are excited to hear this newly commissioned piece! To read more about Mr. Rumsey, visit his website.

Galdieri Flute Repair
Feel free to bring your flute along!  Flute repair technician Pasquale A. Galdieri will be onsite at the Boston Flute Academy Event at the Maliotis Cultural Center in Brookline on April 4th from 6:30-9:30pm. If you are having a problem with your flute or piccolo, he will diagnose it for you free of charge and provide you with a repair estimate. He may also be able to accept your instrument that evening to receive detailed repair work at his shop in Medford.  Pasquale Galdieri repairs fine flutes and piccolos, as well as student level flutes of any brand.  Click on Flute Repair for his website.
