Friends of the Library Cultural Series

The Friends of the Library are pleased to welcome New Hampshire folk artist and multi-instrumentalist Sarah Jane Nelson for a concert at the Dover Public Library on Tuesday, January 20, 2015 at 7pm.

Sarah Jane is an old-time fiddler, guitarist, and vocalist who sings songs in the Anglo-American ballad tradition and plays music from the Appalachian region. She has been playing traditional music for folk festivals, New England contra dances, and other regional events for over a decade. She performs solo, and also with the High-Strung Strummers, Banjos & Old Lace, and as a member of Gypsy Minor, a dance band regularly featured at the New England and Down East Folk Festivals.

Please join us for this lively evening of traditional American folk music. Friends of the Library programs are always free and refreshments will follow. For more information, call the Dover Public Library at 603-516-6050.

The Library Book Group meets on the 3rd Monday of each month at 6:30pm in the Trustees Room (exceptions due to holidays). New Kindle Fires

In addition to the library's six Kindle ebook readers (which currently contain over 100 books), library patrons now have the option to borrow one of two new Kindle Fire tablets. They not only hold the library's selection of ebooks, but also a wide-ranging collection of useful apps and popular games. Plus, the Kindle Fire displays in color!

Some of the games we've installed on the Kindle Fires include: Color Sheep, Doodle Jump, Words with Friends, and Drawing Pad. A few of the apps offered are: Ancestry, the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, Duolingo, IMDb, iTranslate, Jamie's 20-minute Meals, and Quizlet. Certain of these apps require the user to establish their own personal account. Accounts can sometimes be created for free (e.g. Facebook or Pinterest) but others (e.g. Ancestry, Spotify or Netflix) do charge the user a monthly or annual fee to join. To clarify, the library provides access to the apps through the Kindle Fires, but will not pay for individual users to, for example, rent a movie.

We would suggest that if you just want to read ebooks, you check out one of the six Kindle ebook Readers. They are simple to use and lighter to hold. If you'd like to try some apps, check out a Kindle Fire.
