Catawba County Earns Top Recycling Ranking
NC DENR Ranks Catawba County, NC at Top for Materials Recycled Per Person
|
Catawba County achieved the top ranking among all North Carolina counties in the amount of materials recycled per person, for the third time in four years, according to information released by the North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources. Catawba County ranked first in North Carolina for Fiscal Year 2013-14, with 507.55 pounds recycled, per person. Pitt County ranked second with 470.90 pounds recycled, per person.
"We are very pleased to again have this distinction that reflects the dedicated efforts of Catawba County citizens, businesses - particularly Republic Services, the County's solid waste franchisee - school systems and our own cities and towns, who have made recycling a very high priority for more than two decades," Amanda Kain said via a press release, who is the Catawba County's Waste Reduction Coordinator and Educator.
Kain added that a broad set of recycling-based initiatives in Catawba County led to the top ranking. In addition to the county-wide collection of recyclable material, the County operates an EcoComplex, designed to bring together businesses, located in a close area, that re-use each other's waste streams. Republic Services operates a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) that separates recycled items from the general waste stream. The county also began a Commercial Recycling and Waste Reduction Partnership in Fiscal Year 2008-09. Another contributing factor in the top ranking is the year-round collection of electronics and asphalt roofing shingles at the Blackburn Landfill, whenever the landfill is open, since 2013.

CRA Member Spotlight
Lisa Rider - Onslow County, NC
|

Lisa with skateboard made from marine debris
|
The CRA 2014 Recycler of the Year and long-time member, Lisa Rider, will be furthering her impact on the recycling world as part of the eXXpedition Amazon research trip this December conducting research on plastics in the ocean.
eXXpedition is a series of voyages to "make the unseen seen." During her eXXpedition voyage aboard the Sea Dragon, Lisa's research focus will be studying plastic chemical absorption and plastic accumulation in the ocean and nearby solid waste facility infrastructure as it relates to such accumulation. They will be feeding in the samples and data to wider studies investigating the impacts of these materials and linking this sampling to narratives of ecosystem health, personal health, and the products we consume. She will also be working on developing curriculum for formal and informal educators to use in regards to marine debris prevention and best management practices for removal. The plastic research also includes studying the solid waste and recycling infrastructure of Recife, Brazil and Guyana, which will include waste audits and other data collection methods at solid waste facilities.
As an eastern North Carolina native, Lisa is extremely proud to represent the US and North Carolina on this crew of all female researchers from around the world. The research being done will be far reaching and will serve to provide useful information on reducing plastic accumulation and pollutants around the world and for future generations to come.
