Suicide is an issue that impacts all of society.
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among young people ages 10 to 24, and LGB youth are 4 times more likely, and questioning youth are 3 times more likely, to attempt suicide as their straight peers. (The Trevor Project)
- Gay/bisexual male adults & adolescents have a 4 time higher lifetime rate of suicide attempts than heterosexual males, and Lesbian/bisexual female adults & adolescents have a 2 times higher lifetime rate of attempts than heterosexual females. (American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)
Suicide prevention programs can play an important role in reducing this serious societal issue. These programs cannot survive without the support of their community members though. Come out and support the cause!
We hope to see you there!

Did you know that spending just 15 minutes a day listening and talking with your child can help improve your relationship and prevent bullying?
The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration has created a
free app,
KnowBullying to help prevent bullying.
The app shares conversation starters, tips, warning signs, and reminders with parents, caregivers, and educators.
Research has demonstrated that parents and caregivers who spend at least 15 minutes a day talking with their child can build a foundation for a strong relationship and help prevent bullying.
This time can help increase a child's confidence and provide important insight into the child's life, by asking about a child's school, friends, and any other challenges they face. Such conversations also allow for the creation of effective strategies for facing bullying - regardless of whether children are being bullied, engaging in bullying, or witnessing bullying.
The app is available for Androids or iOS.

Local: Contention in Fairfax |
It's been over a month since the Fairfax County School Board approved a proposal to add gender identity to its Family Life Education curriculum, but the contention that began as soon as the proposal was announced continues to on go.
Past president of Metro DC PFLAG, Phil Hicks, spoke in support of the proposed changes at the School Board Meeting, and just recently took to media to highlight the misrepresentation of the amendments that one school board member has been using in her arguments opposing the changes.
He believes that although this one individual continues to oppose and criticize the amendments, "the overwhelming majority of the school board did the right thing in moving to brings its curriculum into the 21st century."
Phil's full editorial can be read
