WISCONSIN DEMENTIA INITIATIVE
TO USE SHARE THE CARE™ MODEL

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services proposed a three-year Alzheimer's Disease Initiative Specialized Supportive Services project in partnership with the Greater Wisconsin Agency on Aging Resources to enable people with dementia to live at home as long as possible by addressing gaps in Wisconsin's dementia care system.  The objective is to develop networks of support (using the STC model) for people with dementia living alone.

Expected outcomes from participation in STC include improved caregiver health and well-being, improved quality of life for people with dementia, delayed admissions to nursing homes and assisted living facilities and financial savings of both public and private resources.

Wausau Training
Wausau, WI
To kick off this Initiative Sheila went to Wisconsin to join up with the new State STC Project Coordinator, Joan Litwitz, and head to Wausau and Barabaoo where Sheila led two professional trainings and offered strategies for STC groups to use when working with people with early  stage dementia.  The attendees were also provided with a dementia specific resource binder to support their efforts.

Joan has 25 years of experience with Alzheimer's Disease and other related dementias, and she will be providing additional training on the disease to those who attended as well as growing the program throughout the state.   The goal of the project is to build on already established STC Stations In a variety of counties and create additional ones.

If you are in Wisconsin and interested in becoming part of this initiative you can contact WI STC Project Coordinator Joan Litwitz directly at: [email protected]

Alene Hokenstad, MSSA

Phyllis Quinlan, PhD RN-BC

Marc Kluender,PhD
Alene has long served as an active member of the STC Steering Committee and was responsible for finding our researcher, Amy Hegener, and working with us for more than a year to provide her own expertise. As result of Amy's research STC is now an evidence-informed model.  This collaborative effort has resulted in a standout milestone for the STC model
Phyllis is a true advocate of STC as and has supported our work by providing her professional input so that the STC Training could meet the accreditation requirements of the Northeast Multi-State Div. RN Continuing Education Unit.  Phyllis appeared in STC's Lady Godiva Award video to voice a health professional's perspective on value of the STC model .

Marc has followed the growth of the STC model since it's early beginnings in 1995. In 2011, he attended the STC Monterey training and was a member of the local STC Council and provided us with a wonderful
testimonial in Health Professional section of the website. Marc and his wife Margot live in Oakland, CA. and have organized several STC groups in their area.

SEEKING ACTIVE STC GROUPS IN DC AREA
FOR AN INTERVIEW WITH THE WASHINGTON POST

Although there have been many STC groups in the DC area (MD and VA) we are searching for one that is currently active and willing to do an interview.

We'd love a story on the STC experience to appear in The Washington Post because it could inspire readers to consider the model to help a loved one, or a friend or neighbor in need of support.
