Kasota Ponds Clean Up April 25th

Kasota Ponds Clean Up

10:00am at Kasota Ponds

Food provided

Every year, we sponsor the neighborhood clean up of Kasota Ponds. Over the course of the year, litter and garbage damage this important wetland area, leaving a blemish on our neighborhood. Join your neighbors in a fun, collaborative effort to clean up Kasota Ponds, restoring a beautiful wetland area right down the street from us.

Meet us at Kasota Ponds (near Metro Metals 2576 Doswell Ave.) at 10:00am on Saturday April 25th to clean for a few hours. Wear outdoor-friendly clothes and close-toed shoes. We'll provide some food and water for everyone who helps!

We will also offer an opportunity to take the SAPCC strategic planning survey in person. If you haven't already, take the survey online now to help us plan for the future of our community,

This year we will proudly host the first student-lead clean up day on the following Monday, April 27th. Avalon students will lead a second round of cleaning in order to ensure that we can restore Kasota Ponds to its natural habitat. Teachers at Avalon will be able to use this as a teaching moment while students get the opportunity to, quite literally, get their feet wet in community engagement. Thank you to Avalon School for their partnership on this and other projects!

Claire's Column: Read a High School Student's Perspective

By: Claire Lingen-Mathews

Art influences people in a way unlike anything else can, and when I say art I mean any form of creative expression, from street art, to theater, to music, to photography. Its of course valuable to get information from factual articles, but I believe that the influence art has on people's lives outweighs anything else. When it comes to bringing people together or instigating change there's nothing like art.

Now take a moment to consider what you could bring to the table, what do you have to offer your community? Whether a personality trait you value or a skill, write it down "I bring ____ to my community." Now consider are you doing everything you can with your skills in as many areas of your life as possible? Have you shared them openly? I guarantee there is someone out there, someone in St.Anthony Park who would appreciate or could benefit from your knowledge.

Art has a unique way of getting people thinking, getting them to check within themselves, or simply stop to enjoy something for a moment of their busy lives. I know my day is always brighter after seeing an "I love you" sticker on a lamppost. When my ideas are challenged or my boundaries are pushed by a piece of poetry it sparks something in me, telling me there's more I can do. When it comes to social justice work there is always something more to do.

So put yourself out there, I know there's never enough time, but I also know I'm always happier while working for something, expressing myself, or helping someone else. If art is something you are passionate about, share it with me, one submission will be chosen each month to be sent out in the St.Anthony Park newsletter. Email me at claire-intern@SAPCC.org with any submissions. Include not only the art piece (whether visual or written or both) but also a brief bio about yourself and what your art means to you.

Welcome Kathryn Murray: New Board Member

We excitedly announce the appointment of a new board member to SAPCC's board! Kathryn Murray worked in the arts in our community for years. Most recently as a Program Assistant for Springboard for the Arts (a non-profit dedicated to supporting the arts located in our community), Kathryn has shown her dedication to this community and especially its artistic endeavors. We welcome her experience as a resident in South St. Anthony Park and years of working in the arts to the board. She has worked with other arts-supporting organizations in the area including the St. Paul Art Crawl and Forecast Public Art.
