Why We Do This

Many of our trucking clients and friends might be coming back from vacation, seeing this newsletter amidst a pile of "other" mail. So why do I send this in July? Simple: we care very much about our ongoing relationship with you. And we don't take it for granted.

It seems that many in our industry feel that they sit comfortably, as they know that their clients are "locked" into

them because they hold all of their financial information-- and it's a pain to switch accountants or tax preparers. So, as a

result, in our industry, we're not given a lot of natural incentive to provide good service. Sadly most preparers do just enough to keep you from going elsewhere.

Benchmarks for Your Financial Life

I thought I would take the time this week to give you an objective, "incentive-free" look at what your finances should look like when you hit the half century mark. If you are close to that mark, I thought it might be useful for me to lay out the "perfect"

scenario.

And look - if you're not perfect, at least let it be a

benchmark...

Many people see a doctor when they hit the age of 50 -- well, let this be a visit from a financial doctor, if you will.

1) Your estate plan should be fully in place.
Of course, various assets are handled differently. This is the time to make a complete review of how your plan is put together, to ensure that EVERY asset (not just the tangible ones) are still handled properly.

Little-Known Book Facts

Some of these are pretty fun (I especially like the first one).

Green Eggs & Ham. This Dr. Seuss classic was written on a bet.Publisher Bennett Cerf wagered $50 that Ted Geisel couldn't write a children's book using fewer then 50 different words. Geisel won.

Thomas Jefferson. The third U.S. president (and writer of the Declaration of Independence) invented more than 100 "American" words to distinguish U.S. writing from British usage-including the word "anglophobia."

Saving For College On The Decline

A college education is expensive, and saving for it takes time and sacrifice. So much, unfortunately, that fewer U.S. parents are doing it, according to a report I just saw from student loan lender Sallie Mae and market research firm Ipsos Public Affairs.

The study found that among parents with kids 18 or younger, only 48 percent are saving for college in 2015, a decline
from 51 percent in 2014. The peak came in 2009, when 52 percent of parents reported saving money for their kids' college education.
