In the Community
We Bid Farewell and Congrats to the Class of 2015!

The Upper School campus was filled with joy and sunshine on Saturday, May 30 as the St. Andrew's community gathered together for the Class of 2015's Graduation ceremony. These 106 inquisitive, ambitious, and talented students took the stage at Founder's Hall to receive their diplomas and bid farewell to their loving St. Andrew's family. Read the full article here.

Marsha Russell says goodbye to the Class of 2015.
Did you miss your chance to register for St. Andrew's AP Art History Lecture & Dinner with Marsha Russell?  A few spaces are still available!

On Sunday evening, September 13, St. Andrew's AP Art History teacher Marsha Russell will take as many as 50 guests on an exclusive journey through art history, bringing unique perspectives, little-known secrets, and more to her fascinating presentation.  You'll quickly see why her class is oversubscribed!

An avid traveler and photographer--and St. Andrew's 2014 Teacher of the Year--Marsha brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to her lectures.  During this lecture, which includes a fabulous catered dinner, she will provide a sneak-peek at her new AP Art History Curriculum (not yet seen by her students!), including new material from her upcoming travels this summer.

Marsha has taught AP Art History and sophomore Humanities at St. Andrew's for the past 15 years, following 10 years with the Liberal Arts Academy at Johnston High School. She founded the AP Art History program at both schools and was the first to teach the course in the Austin metropolitan area.

Don't miss this once-in-a-lifetime journey by one of St. Andrew's most beloved teachers.  And even better - all proceeds from this event support St. Andrew's Financial Aid Program.

Rain is No Match for Lower School Field Day

Despite the rain clouds, our students brought their full energy and enthusiasm to a day's worth of PE activities on the field and in the gym, with faculty and even some senior students lending a hand. Red, blue, and white teams had to work together to successfully complete tasks (like shuttling a giant ball across the gym) in the fastest time to earn points for their team. The full day of round-robin style teamwork competition was a fun way to finish the last week of school at the Lower School!

Spanish "Iron Chef" is Recipe for Fun
by Sandy Flores, LS Spanish teacher

On Friday, May 22 the fifth grade held its annual Cocinero/a de Acero or "Iron Chef" competition in Spanish.  Students spent four weeks preparing their favorite dish and presenting it to their classmates all in Spanish.  After several days of presentation in Se?ora Flores' classes, 10 finalists were selected to compete in the grand finale.  Judges this year were Sara Ballon, Mercedes Madiedo, Emily Meader, and  Gloria Munguia (former SAS Spanish teacher).  The finalists were Bering Edwards, Elle Garcia, Laney Goodrum, David Greskovich, Sophie Hawthorne, Nicole Heyer, Sabrina Kalmans,  Arman Rokhsaz, Audrey Schultz,  and Grace Young. Elle Garcia was named "la Cocinera de acero del 2015," and David Greskovich closely followed in second place.

"Joyful Participation" at First Diversity Dash

On Saturday, May 16, runners of all ages braved the elements to join us on St. Andrew's beautiful Upper School campus for the inaugural Diversity Dash. The event ran smoothly due in large part to the student volunteers who helped place trail markers, run the food table and raffle, and do face painting. The event coordinator, Director of Diversity Kendall Evans, remarks, "I was really impressed with how joyfully the volunteers performed their duties. They really embraced the event and its purpose, which was wonderful to see." Considering the substantial number of St. Andrew's seventh- and eighth-grade volunteers, Kendall adds, "I have to give [MS Community Service Coordinator] Carrie Nelson and [Head of Middle School] Alice Nezzer kudos for encouraging the Middle Schoolers to support this event." Second Grade Shares "Gratitude Tree"

This year the second grade explored the meaning of "gratitude." Nicole Williams' students wrote in gratitude journals every month, which they took home to parents who in turn replied with their own gratitude thoughts. Students even wrote to faculty and administrators, who also gave each student a response. Second graders shared their gratitude project with the fifth and sixth grades in chapel; sixth graders like Aislyn Lyman visited the second grade to share their gratitude practices as well. In the spirit of sharing with the entire community, Nicole's class created a "gratitude tree" in McGill Chapel, where students, parents, and faculty could contribute leaves describing their gratitude. As the tree grew new leaves, the students became increasingly excited about their impact on the school. As Nicole notes, "It shows students that this idea is important to the whole community, and that we practice what we preach."
MS, US Coaches Host Football Clinic

Rising 6th-, 7th-, and 8th-graders were invited to participate in a free, after-school football clinic at the LS/MS campus. Former Heisman trophy winner Ty Detmer, along with Jason Kruger and other MS and US football coaches, were on hand to teach fundamental skills and run drills. It was a great way for students interested in playing Cru football--including new students!--to meet the coaches and get some helpful tips.

Middle School's "Peter Pan" Delivers Magical Moments

The Middle School's "Peter Pan" production on May 8-9 was a true feat in storytelling and acrobatics. Professional flying harnesses served as the magical fairy dust that helped the Darling children and Peter Pan glide, jump, and spin in flight across the stage. A curtain of stars, a painted forest backdrop, and a partial pirate ship were just a few of the other fine touches that transported the audience to Never-Never Land. Like most theatrical productions of this scale, "Peter Pan" brought the 63 cast members new creative challenges and opportunities to build their confidence.
Top Ratings for MS Orchestra and Band
by Danny Schmidt, LS/MS Band Director
The St. Andrew's Middle School Band and Orchestra attended the Director's Choice Alamo Showcase of Music Festival at Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas on Saturday, May 16.  Both groups had outstanding performances!

The Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Amy Harris, received a rating of "Quality" from the adjudicators.  The Band, under the direction of Danny Schmidt, received a rating of "Excellent" from the adjudicators.  Specific judge's comments for the groups were "Excellent fundamentals throughout the ensemble," and "Excellent teaching going on here."

The ensembles then went to Six Flags, Fiesta Texas to enjoy the rest of the day at the park.  Congratulations to these two outstanding St. Andrew's performing arts programs!

MS Faculty Teams Up for Triathlon
by Danny Schmidt, LS/MS Band Director

The St. Andrew's faculty was well represented at the recent Cap-Tex triathlon on Memorial Day.  Our team comprised of Middle School teachers Danny Schmidt, Greg Mele, Molly Blackman, Tori Davis, and her husband Gil Garcia all competed in the Sprint distance event consisting of a .46 mile swim (unfortunately canceled due to unsafe swimming conditions in Lady Bird Johnson Lake after flooding), a 12.42 mile bike, and 5K run.  This was the first triathlon for most of these athletes.  They not only completed the course, but had some personal best times for the events as well.

Greg spearheaded a campaign back in August for the Middle School teachers to remain committed to a goal of regular exercise to promote general health and well-being.  Shortly thereafter, Molly then rallied us all with the idea of competing in the triathlon, so we all made the commitment and followed through with regular exercise and then training for the triathlon as it got closer.  All of these athletes were energized by the event and are excited about doing it again in the near future.

Nazro House Clinches Top Prize

The Middle School's Houses (Bailey, Henry, Nazro, Wilson) competed in a final tournament last week to determine which House  would win the year-long points race. The House captains created 14 events covering topics in the arts, athletics, and academics (including ping pong, lip synching, quiz bowl, and debate). The creator of this year's House system, MS Dean Tim Moore, remarked, "In my 6 years of doing a House system it has never been this close at the end!"

The Nazro House came out victorious, taking the top prize at the Middle School Awards  Banquet on May 22. They accumulated the most points for their teamwork, school spirit, and volunteer work  over the course of the school year. Well done Nazro!

DFAC Hosts Con Mi MADRE Graduation

St. Andrew's welcomed partner organization Con Mi MADRE (Mothers and Daughters Raising Expectations) to the Dell Fine Arts Center on May 17 for their 2015 graduation ceremony. Con Mi MADRE focuses on supporting young Latina women through their academic journey in high school to prepare them for college. Executive Director Teresa Granillo remarked, " It is absolutely amazing to see our young Latinas graduate from high school and enter college majoring in engineering, neuroscience, and international business administration...A special thank you goes out to Kendall Evans and St. Andrew's Episcopal School for graciously allowing us to use the Dell Fine Arts Center to celebrate our graduates and shower our volunteers, Board of Directors, sponsors, Madrinas y Padrinos, and our families with love and appreciation for all that they do!"

9th Annual Film Festival
US teacher Rommel Eclarinal's Beginning and Advanced Filmmaking students hosted their end of the year screening at the Dell Fine Arts Center on May 15. After a year of exploring various film styles (narrative, experimental, documentary, silent) students collaborated in small groups on a final film. Their 20 short films spanned topics like spearfishing, elite military squads, family life, sports, the great outdoors, and food. Rommel noted, laughingly, "After my students finished their silent film unit, they were ready for some dialogue. It certainly shows in these films!"

Biggar, Guttell Make USA's Invitational Volleyball Teams

Congratulations to Caroline Biggar ('16) who has been selected for the training program of the USA High Performance Girls Youth A2 Invitational Team. Caroline participated in the program in Colorado Springs last summer. Congratulations go to Barrett Guttell ('17) as well for making the A3 team. Collegiate volleyball teams are already interested in these young women: Caroline has verbally committed to Brown University, and Barrett has verbally committed to Ole Miss.

Showcase Sends Seniors Off on High Note

Mandy Justiz and Nate Stephenson wanted one last chance to take the stage before bidding their musical theater home farewell. The Senior Project--a required internship or independent study for 3 weeks before graduation--was a perfect opportunity for them to create a night of musical theater that let them take center stage to pay homage to the "dream roles" that inspired them. On May 22 and 23, Mandy and Nate took their final bow as performers at the Dell Fine Arts Center. Click here to read the full article.

Alumni News
Fellow Cru, A&M Alums to Teach in 2015-16!

Hailey Hunter ('11), US Math

Hailey will be joining the Upper School this fall as a math teacher. She earned a BA in Math and her teaching certificate from Texas A&M in December 2014. She's also worked as a Mathnasium instructor for students in grades 2-12.

Audrey Huntsberger ('09), MS Math

Audrey, a St. Andrew's "lifer," will be joining us this fall as a math teacher in the Middle School. Audrey graduated from Texas A&M in December of 2013, and moved back to Austin to teach at Leander Middle School as a science teacher. She's currently in graduate school working towards a master's degree in education with a focus in mathematics and teacher leadership. She spends her free time volunteering for Heart of Texas Lab Rescue and enjoying all that Austin has to offer.

Sarah Miller ('85) recently launched Chatterhood, an online resource she describes as "Yelp meets Angie's List" for parents looking for reliable suggestions on kid-friendly businesses, babysitters, playdate locations, etc. We talked briefly with Sarah on her journey from St. Andrew's student to Chatterhood CEO.

Sarah graduated from St. Andrew's Lower School in 1985. She says her favorite St. Andrew's memories "involve music and Mrs. Elkjer's class: singing a solo 'In His Time' for a chapel service, performing in the first grade musical 'Down by the Creekbank,' and learning to play recorder and ukulele. I also loved learning calligraphy in Mrs. Roberts' fourth grade class, and I still use it to this day."

Sarah went on to graduate from Austin High School, then DePaw University with a degree in French and International Business. Later she earned an MBA from Texas Christian University. After working for high-tech firms, government and non-profits, Sarah now works as the Executive Director of Development Communications at UT's Health Science Center in Houston.

Sarah spent years re-locating with her husband and two kids to new towns across the U.S., and struggled to find recommendations for local, kid-friendly vendors. As working parents, neither she nor her husband had enough time to spend hours researching online. Sarah decided to create her own solution, and launched the website Chatterhood in spring 2015 to fill this void. Sarah says she's still in the process of building up the platform, which serves mostly Central Texas but is growing to serve other cities nationwide.

If you're a parent who likes to provide feedback on these types of tools, Sarah would love to hear from you. She's in the process of setting up focus groups to identify the features that matter most to parents of all ages.

Nicole Falkenberg ('08)

Nicole recently contacted us to share her experience in LA, and to encourage students interested in the film industry to contact her to learn more.

Nicole was a "lifer" of St. Andrew's. She recalls Darryl Borges having a special role during her college application process. She says, "I first knew Senor Borges as my Spanish teacher freshman year, and then I was fortunate enough to have him as my senior year advisor. I will be forever grateful to him for his kindness and for being a cheerleader for me throughout high school and especially during the college application process. I still firmly believe that whatever he said in his support letter must have played a strong role in my admission to UT. I know he'd be proud to see that although I work in a field that is stressful by nature, I
never allow myself to panic. He was eternally patient and supportive for the long months I spent incessantly freaking out waiting to hear back from UT!"

After graduating from UT, Nicole moved to LA to work at a talent agency. She now works in Publicity at Fox Searchlight Pictures, which has won the Academy Award for Best Picture both years that I have worked here (first for 12 Years A Slave and most recently for Birdman). She says, "It's been a busy year and our upcoming slate is awesome! I wanted to share my story in case any students are interested in potentially working in the industry. LA is amazing! I can also now add that our next film is called 'Me & Earl & The Dying Girl' which won both the Grand Jury Prize and the Audience Award at Sundance earlier this year. It releases in Austin on June 26 and I'd encourage everyone to go see it; it's one of my favorites!"

Recently Spotted on Campus: Caroline Pinkston ('04)

Caroline Pinkston came to the St. Andrew's Diversity Dash on May 16, representing our partner organization Breakthrough Austin. Caroline received her BA in English and American Studies from Northwestern University, followed by master's degrees in English Education from Lehman College and in American Studies from the University of Texas. She taught at St. Andrew's as an English teacher for several years, and was introduced to Breakthrough as an Instructional Coach at the UT Summer Program.
