Highly Commended & Partnership Working

This month has been one of extremes. From the glitz and glamour of the Bath Life Awards, where we were highly commended in the Creativity category, to the studious environment of the Cultural Commissioning learning programme.

Spending two days alongside other cultural organisations, many of whom had travelled to Bristol from far-flung locations such as Glasgow and Northumberland, was a very interesting and empowering exercise. We were treated to a Q&A with a Bristol based commissioner who painted a very bleak picture for the arts within the landscape of future funding. Many there were ready to

throw in the towel straight away! Creativity Works however is leading the way in commissioning in the south west, already being a case study for the arts council amongst others. However we too certainly have a lot to learn. Becoming experts in the health, social care, or any other environment or sector takes a huge amount of time and effort. For me, the best way to proceed in commissioning is to be in partnership with the bigger players within a specific area, both geographically and professionally. As an organization we place a huge amount of focus on cultivating our partnerships and creating mutually beneficial ways of working. We are currently undertaking some very exciting and potentially fruitful scoping on a number of commissions. We hope to lead the way not only in this new world for cultural organisations, but also in creating new business models for the arts. We shall see.

I currently have three days off and am writing this from the glamour of North London. I am very much hoping to catch the Goya exhibition at the Courtauld gallery and, most importantly, the Elvis exhibition at the 02. 'Thank you very much...!'

New Voluntary Vacancies on the Fresh Art @ NHS House project.

Following the success of the Fresh Art @ Hillview Lodge project last year, a new project Fresh Art @ NHS House has launched!

We are looking for volunteers to assist with the Fresh Art @ NHS House project. It is a participatory arts project that enables Hillview residents and people affected by mental health and their carers to take part in quality art projects in the community. Artwork created will be displayed within Bath NHS House and Sycamore Ward at Hillview acute psychiatric unit, Royal United Hospital. The artwork will be rotated every few months within 3 social rooms at Hillview replacing the old faded pictures/reproductions with 'fresh art' that have been created locally.

Fresh artwork will improve the environment for residents and staff at Hillview and will be conversational, thought provoking and inspirational. There is also an opportunity to exhibit Bath Fringe Festival during the Fringe Arts Bath (22nd May - 7th June).

Volunteers are needed to assist with evaluation, marketing, web-site development, photography and cataloguing, project development, exhibition invigilation, PR and curation.

Please contact [email protected] to register your interest or for more information.

You can also follow the Fresh Art activity via Facebook and Twitter!

Museums Access Training
Further enabling community groups to access museum resources

Our Creative Wellbeing Programme Manager Philippa Forsey along with Bath Age UK, Bath Area Play Project and St.Mungos recently delivered Access training sessions to museum volunteers at the American Museum, No.1 Royal Crescent and the Holburne Museum with great success.

The aim of the training is to enable museum volunteers to think about access and inclusion issues for museum visitors and to create a museum access charter created by volunteers. This is a great initiative as it supports Creativity Works aim to develop Wellbeing Pathways to Culture and Community for participants and projects and strengthens progression opportunities.

The museum staff were very pleased with the training:

"I'm delighted that the recent Access training held at No.1 Royal Crescent, the Holburne and American museums was attended by around 80 volunteer guides. It provided a valuable forum for them to learn about how to offer non-traditional audiences a stimulating, relevant and friendly visitor experience at our sites. The key learning points will be shared between the museums to form an 'Access Charter' which will be included in all future volunteer training. This will help ensure all visitors will feel welcomed and supported whenever they come. One of the volunteers who attended the training described it as "informative and insightful, making me think and reflect on the issues and scenarios." I am very grateful to all the community partner staff, including Philippa Forsey, who inspired us."

Mental Health First Aid Course
A valuable course for those working with people with mental health problems as well as for personal wellbeing - run by Bath Mind.

The two-day Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course teaches techniques to provide help to someone experiencing a mental health problem before professional help is obtained.

Bath Mind's qualified and highly experienced trainers are providing MHFA training to interested individuals, members of voluntary organisations, private and statutory organisations. The course will help participants to support family members, friends, neighbours, colleagues and clients who are experiencing mental distress.

The aims of the course are:

  • To be accessible and relevant to a wide range of participants from across the community
  • To reduce stigma by increasing understanding and awareness of mental and emotional issues
  • To provide a framework for responding to someone in mental or emotional distress
  • To promote good mental health

MHFA does not teach people to be therapists. However, it does teach people how to recognise the symptoms of mental health problems, how to provide initial help and comfort and how to guide a person towards appropriate professional help. The training also provides participants with insight in to their own mental health and effective ways of maintaining their well-being.
