Alicia Clark, CSI-EP, CDT, Chapter Director, Programs Chair

Tuesday, July 14, 2015 at 5:30pm-7:30pm

Yamhill District, Corner of SW 2nd and Oak

Grab a map, the clues, a compass, and comfortable shoes - it's our Fourth Annual Architectural Scavenger Hunt! This year we will be focused on History in the Yamhill District, the oldest part of the city. Come and test your architectural knowledge! Each team will be given a map and clues about the each building's exterior facade and historical relevance. The Team with the most correct answers wins! This is a great event for meeting up with friends, or making some new ones. Meet us on the northeast corner of 2nd and Oak. After the Scavenger Hunt, the winner will be announced at Kells Irish Pub.

Thoughts & Tweets from the Tri
Region Conference
Ellen Onstad, CSI, CDT, President-Elect

Leadership is not a spectator sport - the pin from a few years ago stands true today. If you don't attend events, if you don't speak with people, if you don't interact, you don't get your membership money's worth, in other words return on investment (ROI).

So what have you done for your chapter lately?

The Tri Region Conference this year was held in San Diego California, The regions that attended were from the Northwest, West and Southwest (so in other words - everybody on the left half of the US) having attended the Northwest Region conferences for the past few years it was interesting to get a perspective from other chapters in the country.

For example, some chapters have as many members in their chapter as we have come to meetings. Portland chapter remains one of the largest in the Nation. (As of today our numbers are 267 - the next highest is 303 or so) our retention rate has improved due to the diligent efforts of the membership committee. We average 50 to 75 people at our chapter meetings and are increasing our involvement in the industry.

While in San Diego I attended the leadership track and while I received a lot of information and interest, it was exciting to share with others what we are doing here in Portland. For example, in one of the seminars on students and membership, Kathy and I mentioned the CDT Student Scholarship program. That was met with lots of interest and excitement due to first - involving the young professionals in our chapter, but also increasing the number and passing rate for the CDT exam. Retention for these individuals can be a challenge due to the cost and support of their employers. Membership (as we know) is not cheap and unless employers see a return on investment there may not be support in future events.

Some chapters cycle thru the same members as leaders multiple times. We (the Portland Chapter Board) are always looking for new leaders; if you have interest please let us know.

What's worse? Under-specifying or over-specifying? It's a trick question; one is no better than the other. We'll look at under-specifying now, and over-specifying next time.
