Stellar Scholars Shine at PSIA Competition!

Congratulations to our 36 Lower and Middle School students who participated in the Private Schools Interscholastic Association (PSIA) Academic District Meet on March 7! Not only did all of our participating students place in the competition, but seven students are now headed to the PSIA Academic State Meet on April 25. St. Andrew's students were top competitors in 35 contest categories spanning math, science, language arts, speech, social studies, and fine arts.

St. Andrew's parent Swapna Mutyala remarks, "It was a great and highly enriching experience for my daughter Jiya." Second-grader Jiya, along with first-grader James Graham, took first place in their Creative Writing contests, earning them a spot at the State competition. Michelle Natinsky, whose son Joshua placed fifth for Number Sense, remarks, "These students worked so hard to represent our school!" Colleen Kell, who coordinated St. Andrew's participation in the event, adds to the accolades, "Our students were impressive, and we're all so very proud of them." Click here to read the full article and list of participants.

Drums & Stories Fill Crusader Hall

Our Lower Schoolers celebrated community and ancestry together through play and creative  activities for Special Topics Day on March 13. Students brought energy and attentiveness to their interactive drumming session with the X8 Interactive Drumming team, learning how to actively listen to each other while maintaining their own beat. Later, all six grades worked together in groups to create original poems using the phrase, "We are many, we are one," to weave their ancestral stories together. Students then read aloud their collaborative poems to the rest of the school, with accompaniment by the Percussion Band, at the final assembly of the day (Click here to read the poem or watch the video). It was a wonderful opportunity for students to share something special about their heritage with the rest of their community in a fun and engaging way!

Sign-Up for Our Diversity Dash!

Runners of all ages are invited to join us on St. Andrew's beautiful Upper School campus for the inaugural Diversity Dash on Saturday, May 16. We're celebrating our growing diversity and our partner organizations-Breakthrough Austin, Con Mi MADRE, and El Buen Samaritano-who address the needs of under-served students in the local area.

The St. Andrew's Diversity Dash will feature a timed 5-kilometer race on the scenic Gilbert Tuhabonye Trail; medals will go to top finishers, and a pizza party will be awarded to the team with the most runners. A 400-meter "Fun Run" will keep our younger runners in the action as well. Raffle prizes, art, music, and post-race snacks will make it a blast for the entire family!

The Cru Goes to Washington

Fifth- and sixth-graders headed to the nation's capital over spring break, with faculty chaperones Stephanie Kruger, Nichole Adams, and Tim McGhee navigating them through a jam-packed itinerary of D.C. highlights, including the White House, Capitol Hill, Library of Congress, a special tour of the Supreme Court by clerk Scott Harris, national monuments and memorials, Natural History and Holocaust museums, and the National Cathedral. The chilly east coast weather was no match for our adventurous Cru!

The 6th Grade Graduation Ceremony and Luncheon is scheduled for Tuesday, May 26. The service and communion will begin in the chapel at 10:45 am, followed by a luncheon and slideshow in Crusader Hall. This will end in time for 1:30 pm dismissal.

Mary Whitaker will be creating the slideshow this year and she needs our help with photos:

  • Please send 3 photos (JPEG) of your child, preferably from various stages in his or her life (ie. baby, around age 6, present) to [email protected] no later than Friday, April 10
  • Do not send photos that have friends in them or photos from birthday parties, as this may cause hurt feelings.
  • Include your child's first and last name in the subject of the email

We look forward to sharing these fun photos with the audience!

7th Graders Prepare to Lead MS

Middle School Dean of Students Tim Moore led seventh-graders in leadership activities on March 12-13, in preparation for their role as the oldest students on the Lower and Middle School campus next year. As Tim says, "With this comes a certain sense of responsibility and new opportunities. One great thing about going to school here is that there are so many ways students can get involved in a leadership role at the school." Various roles students can sign up for include House Captain (organize weekly student activities), Student Council (organize class parties and dances), and Ambassadors (showcasing the school to visitors). To explore their ideas of what makes good leaders, students used sticky notes to quietly list and group leadership characteristics. Then they put their leadership skills to the test with a House challenge. Using dried spaghetti and marshmallows, teams raced to build the tallest, structurally-sound castle capable of balancing a plastic cup. It was a fun way to get excited for next year's responsibilities!

The annual voyage to Big Bend brought eighth-graders together for some fun and learning in the great outdoors. It was a wonderful way to head into spring break! Click here to see the complete gallery of photos. Thank you faculty chaperone Barton Ballard for capturing the fun on film!

London Calling!

Middle Schoolers hopped across the pond over their spring break for a three-day tour of Edinburgh, Scotland before heading to London, England for four days. Highlights included Edinburgh Castle, St. Giles Cathedral, the Royal Mile and Holyrood Palace, followed by a train ride to London for the London Eye, the Changing of the Guard at Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, Covent Garden, the British Museum, and Westminster Abbey. After taking in the sights, students enjoyed a performance of "Treasure Island" at the National Theatre. Faculty chaperones Jason Kruger and Ashley Brandon kept our Cru busy (and smiling)!

Kick-Off to 9th Grade

On March 25 the Class of 2019, along with their parents, gathered at the Upper School to meet and greet newly accepted St. Andrew's families, and to enjoy the company of their fellow Cru as they prepare for their transition to the beautiful Southwest Parkway campus next year. Students and parents had the chance to chat with each other in a casual reception in Founder's Hall. These eighth-graders are excited to begin the next chapter in their St. Andrew's journey!

Congratulations Coach!

Upper School Football coach Ty Detmer will be inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame on Thursday, April 9 in Waco!

Ty won the 1990 Heisman Trophy during his college career as a two-time All-American at BYU before playing for five NFL teams over 12 seasons.

Ty is one of eight inductees being honored in Waco on April 9.

SAS Summer Camp for Upper School Too!

Summer camp isn't just for kids, at least not at St. Andrew's! Fifteen new art classes are being offered this summer in the fabulous Upper School art studios in the Dell Fine Arts Center. Students from all over Austin in grades 6 and above are welcome to join the Upper School Art camps for a variety of intense art experiences.

These week-long classes provide in-depth experience in each of these studios:  Hot Glass Beads, Japanese Furniture Design and Building, and Architectural Projects in the Sculpture Studio; Drawing Intensive and Oil Painting in the Drawing Studio; Digital Photography, Graphic Design Projects, and Photoshop in the Digital Media Lab; and Film Photography and Darkroom Skills in the new "old school" Darkroom.

US Art teacher Susan Kemner-Reed says, "We are thrilled to open the new art studios to the community for summer classes.  St. Andrew's students and students from other schools are welcome to join us on this exciting new venture.  This is the first year that the Upper School art studios will be open in the summer and we know that each student will enjoy the new facilities and the top-notch artists involved in this project!"

If you want to flex your athletic skills too, our Basketball and Volleyball camps are a great fit for athletes of various age levels and skills. US Athletics Director Jeff McCrary says, "We are excited to offer campers small class sizes to allow for excellent individual instruction from our Varsity coaches." Ten Nominations for "Sweeney Todd"!

Congratulations to the cast and crew of this year's
Sweeney Todd production, who have received 10--out of a possible 13--award nominations from the Greater Austin High School Musical Theatre Award (GAHSMTA) judging panel! St. Andrew's performers, crew, designers, and directors delivered three sold-out performances of this Stephen Sondheim thriller last fall, and now they are receiving official recognition for their incredible work. Director Rick Garcia says, "I am proud of the entire company of student actors and crew and design team, and we are grateful to be recognized by the GAHSMTA." The winners will be announced in a Tony Awards-style ceremony on April 14 at the Long Center for the Performing Arts. Click here to read the complete list of nominations.

Get Ready to Take Flight!

Mark your calendar for Friday, May 8, when the curtain goes up for the Middle School's production of "Peter Pan." Our 68 Middle School students are hard at work preparing to wow audiences with musical numbers and gravity-defying lifts! And, on Thursday, May 7, the Lower School students will be invited to preview Act I of the show at the Upper School. Not only will the cast get an enthusiastic live audience for rehearsal, but our Lower School students will get a glimpse at the life of Middle and Upper School artists.

Alumni News

Lauren is currently at UT double majoring in Chinese and Finance with a minor in Accounting. Last year, Lauren spent six months in China immersing herself in the language and culture, and working for two months in Shanghai for a financial company considered "the Bloomberg of China." This picture was taken, as Lauren says, "After I climbed a very remote part of the Great Wall with friends and then stayed in the village at the bottom of the mountain with a very hospitable and kind Chinese family!" This summer she'll be an intern at Ernst & Young in Houston.

Thank you for sharing with us Lauren! We look forward to more exciting updates.
