The Presbytery of Baltimore's 869th Gathering and annual Leadership Conference on Saturday marked the start of its year-long focus on race, class and poverty - issues that have spurned fervent protests and pleas for peace and justice in the wake of violent incidents here, in Baltimore, and around the country. Nearly 200 participants attended the event held st Saturday at First Presbyterian Church of
Howard County in Colu
mbia.
Most of the workshops were focused on how we can overcome the geographic, economic, racial and cultural barriers that tend to divide us as a Church. In the workshop on Racial Perceptions,
there was standing room as participants engaged in open
and honest discussions about race and culture. In other workshops participants
discussed fostering partnerships between urban and suburban churches; building community coalitions; and, the roots of poverty in rural communities. Presbyterian Women in the Presbytery also presented workshops on their ministries as part of their Fall Gathering, held jointly with the Leadership Conference.
During the plenary session, attendees listened with rapt attention as Beth Marshall, DrPH and Kristen Mmari, DrPH MA, researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, explained the underlying social factors that impact the health of youth in disadvantaged areas. Later, during worship, Rev. Dr. Kelly Brown Douglas, a scholar and Episcopal priest, declared that during these times of social unrest, "we are to live as a people
called out by God . . . to live with a moral accountability, a prophetic responsibility and a divine integrity that will show forth in this our nation, in this world and these our times -- the very freedom, the very justice and the very image of the One we call God

Other highlights of the Gathering included a renewing of an agreement between the Baltimore and Dakota presbyteries; and, the signing of a 5-year agreement with
CEDEPCA, our new Guatemalan Partnership. During the Decisions and Discernment portion of the Gathering, the Presbytery: approved the 2016 Budget; welcomed new members and bid farewell to others; and, we elected commissioners to the Presbyterian Church USA's 222nd General Assembly.
Many remarked that the Gathering and workshops were inspiring and thought-provoking. The Presbytery will continue to explore our call as God's people in addressing issues of race, class and poverty in our communities and the world.

GP SEARCH COMMITTEE UPDATE:
The General Presbyter Search Committee
has met regularly since the summer. During this time, we've been trained by our Synod Executive, Warren Lasanne, on how best to conduct a search; interviewed church leaders and staff; and, created the Ministry Information Form (MIF) describing the position. The MIF was submitted to Leadership Connection, the call system for PC(USA), and the position was advertised in various publications. We are now pleased to begin reviewing applications for the position of General Presbyter of the Presbytery of Baltimore. Please keep the Committee in your prayers as we continue the search for a new General Presbyter.

NEXT Church is holding a
Listening Campaign this fall involving at least
500 Presbyterian leaders to talk about experiences in mission and gain a sense of how those experiences interface with the structures, programs, and efforts of our national and local church structures. The event will be held locally at 10am on Thursday, Dec. 3 at The Center. Click
