Just a reminder that items appear in only one issue of Link Letter  instead of being repeated over multiple issues. If you're looking for content that was included in a previous issue of Link Letter, this information will be listed on the ESCC website. OOPS
Last week's issue of Link Letter included a couple of errors.

We incorrectly stated that Bonnie Doon Hall is not wheel chair accessible, but it is wheel chair accessible. Please note that for future events. 

Also, last week's entry for the Sage Awards included an error introduced by ESCC during production of the newsletter. We apologize for the mistake. We have included the correct version in this issue of Link Letter.

SAGE AWARDS

The Sage Awards honouring the outstanding achievements and contributions of seniors in our community will be presented on April 15. Download the poster to learn more.
Tickets are $65 each. According to organizers, the awards luncheon has sold out in past years so it is advisable to purchase your tickets early. Order tickets online or with the ticket order form.

REPORT: WHAT'S STOPPING US? INNOVATING FOR SENIORS' HEALTH AND WELLNESS

 

The summary report from the November 2014 forum "What's Stopping Us? Innovating for Seniors' Health and Wellness" presented by the Covenant Health Network of Excellence in Seniors' Health and Wellness is now available. The forum focused on community-based approaches to seniors' health and wellness with discussions from multiple stakeholder groups. Approaches highlighted in the report include the importance of: 

  • Centralized resources to support aging in communities across Alberta
  • Community-based support for family caregivers
  • Alternative models for provision of care to seniors in the community
  • Reframing how we talk about seniors

2015 ALBERTA SURVEY ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITY

The Alberta Centre for Active Living recently published the 2015 Alberta Survey on Physical Activity. This is the first time that the survey investigated both physical activity and sedentary behaviour and results show that one third of Albertans are sedentary for more than 10 hours a day. SENIORS SLO-PITCH

Registration deadline March 31

 

Edmonton Seniors Slo-Pitch Association is accepting registrations for the 2015 season. If you are interested in playing slo-pitch, you will find their league a great way to have fun and exercise and even start some new friendships. Mens and womens slo-pitch players are welcome and the league features three divisions from Competitive to Recreational and also a 45+ Competitive Division. All games are played at Airways Park (113 Street & 113 Avenue) and the diamonds are considered the best slo-pitch diamonds in Edmonton. League play is May thru to September, Monday to Thursday - 2 games per week. For more information check out the ESSPA website or email [email protected].

DONATIONS FOR RUMMAGE SALE

 

The South East Edmonton Seniors Association is accepting donations for their spring rummage sale. Start your spring cleaning and donate cleaned, good-quality items to for the sale. Donations will be accepted starting March 30 at the south door of their centre at 9350 - 82 St.  Almost any item is welcome except baby furniture and supplies, dated materials (such as encyclopedia, magazines and calendars), Readers Digest books, heavy furniture, computer hardware, televisions and shoes. The sale will be held April 25 and 26.

COMPASS FOR THE CAREGIVER WORKSHOP

Alberta Caregivers Association

 

This workshop provides a safe and understanding environment to help caregivers reduce stress, decrease guilt, learn how to get the most out of the system, and begin to care for themselves.  COMPASS is led by former caregivers and the workshop will provide tools for coping and even thriving.

TACKLING HEARING LOSS & MENTAL HEALTH

Two former Eskimo players will speak in the morning about the impact hearing loss had on their life and how they tackled hearing loss. The two afternoon sessions will look at mental health. The agenda and registration form are on the conference website.

Volunteer Opportunities
CASINO VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Seniors Outreach Network Society needs volunteers to work a casino on May 19 and 20 at Yellowhead Casino. Shifts for cashiers, banker, general manager and chip runners start at 6 p.m. and are approximately 9 hours. Shifts for countroom start at 11 p.m. and are approximately 3.5 hours long.
All volunteers are entitled to meals and snacks and training is provided on site. Transportation will be arranged if needed.

Funds raised through the casino will allow the continued operations of the agency which supports seniors to age in place in their home and community. Contact 780-451-4589 if you can lend a hand.
