Bikin' Shorts
May 7, 2015
Here we go on a NEW adventure. My Bikin' Shorts was the title of my first booklet about cycling. It featured short little pieces of information that provided insight and knowledge about proper cycling techniques. So, in that same spirit, we'll be bringing you similar bits of information in this series of e-newsletters. Read, learn, apply, ride and enjoy!
Save your legs - Use your gears
Multi-gear bikes are all about leverage. Make sure that you are using those gears properly by increasing your leg speed and reducing the load (resistance level). Entry level riders should work to get their leg speed (rpm/cadence) above 60rpm. Most recreational cyclists spin the pedals between 60 and 90 rpm.  You should be shifting as the terrain and wind direction changes.

Climb Hills Wthout Blowing Up
monet hillclimb Are hills a challenge? Try to climb them without losing control of your heart rate. Climbing a hill INCREASES the load/resistance level, so we have to adapt and adjust. As you climb a hill, shift to a lower gear (as you need to) to keep your leg speed UP and your heart rate DOWN. If you keep the heart rate going up, then you will BLOW UP and not be able to compete the climb. Climbing hills successfully is a combination of proper gear selection and leg speed.

Riding a multi-gear bike is not the same as riding a single speed bike. There is a lot  more to it. Turning corners, gear selection, pedaling, climbing hills, riding into the wind, navigating in traffic and riding for 100 miles - all of these items require specific skills to make them easier to manage - and easier to enjoy.

I've been cycling since 1974 and have been teaching cycling skills and coaching cyclists since 1987. I can help you find the ride that you have been looking for.

Sincerely,

Bikin' Mike Keel
