Cut for Cancer a Huge Success
In April, the Senior High Student Council sponsored the first CCS "Cut for Cancer."
Forty ladies were preregistered to cut their locks for use in cancer patient wigs. Five local stylists gave their time and talents to do the cutting, and the result was a sacrificial bagful of lovely locks!
A special thank you to Mrs. Peters , Carissa Zaffiro, and Shauna McKain for organizing this event.

5th Grader Finishes 12th in Regional Bee
CCS 5th grader,
Ema Okpoworho finished 12th out of 49 students at the Regional ACSI Spelling Bee!
Junior/Senior High Librarian, Mrs. Rice, said, "Many of the kids were in 7th or 8th grade, so Ema did an amazing job of competing as a 5th grader against all these older kids!"
Great job, Ema!

Annual Senior Art Showcase Wows Attendees
The last Saturday in April, the CCS Art Department Seniors, put on their Annual Senior Art Showcase. This event blew the minds of attendees in a couple of ways! Not only was the event's agenda a huge fine arts variety and very entertaining, but to see the talent of our students and to learn of their accomplishments, awards, and scholarships was pride-inducing!
Here are just some highlights, all performed and exhibited by our CCS students:
- full catered and served-by-students Italian meal
- piano and voice solo entertainment
- senior art displays around the entire venue, including paintings, drawings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, sculpture...
- Aurasma app technology on Ipads allowed patrons to hold Ipad up to a student's art piece and a video of that student would pop up on the screen to describe their piece.
- full fashion show, complete with runway
- poetry readings, including a set-to-music rap
- Mrs. Ashford gave awards and shared each student's accomplishments, scholarships and any art-related college plans.
Special thank you to Senior,
Alyssa Washington, who organized the event.
Mrs. Ashford said of her students, "If you would have told me when I started how far our art program would go, I would have said you were crazy." Our Art Department's programs are a force to be reckoned with; such talent! We are so inspired and proud!

2nd Grade Executes Biography Day
On Friday, April 10th, Mrs. Hempelmann and parents gathered in the CCS Elementary Library to hear our
2nd graders present biographies of famous Americans.
Students dressed in costume and presented their research as part of 2nd grade project-based learning.
Mrs. Cole and Mrs. Schmidt, their teachers, are proud of the hard work of our students!

Mrs. Wedaman Wins Well-Deserved Award
Mrs. Amy Schlake, one of our Junior/Senior High Campus English teachers nominated
Mrs. Bev Wedaman for the Scholastic Reading Club Award for National Aministrative Professionals Day! She was selected, and was delivered a beautiful bouquet of flowers to celebrate, which was a lovely surprise for her!
Mrs. Schlake wrote about Bev's kindness, patience, and Christ-likeness she is in her daily interactions with everyone.
Said another coworker about Bev, "Certainly and without question, she is the face and voice of CCS Junior/Senior High Campus, and is very deserving of this award!"

6th Grade Chess Whizzes
CCS 6th grade chess players competed in the Queen City Classic Chess Tournament.
The
6th grade team came in 3rd place overall. As individuals,
Zach Schlake placed 3rd and
Olivia Reese placed 17th in the 6th grade division.

Junior/Senior High Chess Whizzes
CCS Junior and Senior High chess players recently competed in the Queen City Classic Chess Tournament.
David Haynes placed 15th in the 7th to 9th Grade Division.
The senior
high team placed 2nd overall. And as individuals,
Ethan Myers placed 7th and
Isaac Smearsoll placed 8th.
Well done, Chess Club!

Elementary Science Buddies Make Learning Fun
6th grade and Kindergarten student science buddies made the most of Easter traditions by combining science and fun!
Using only the three primary colors, the students were able to dye their eggs. If they wanted any colors besides red, yellow, or blue, they had to mix them.
A couple of days later, the students hunted the eggs they colored in a traditional egg hunt on school grounds! Science IS fun!

Blue Ribbon Day for CCS at ACSI Junior High Speech Meet
Congratulations to our team of Junior High students who competed in the 2015 ACSI Speech Meet this year at Middletown Christian Schools.
Each student earned a ribbon in their competition category!

Elementary Classes Celebrate 100th Day
Each year it is a CCS Elementary Campus tradition to celebrate the 100th day of school. Each grade celebrates in different fun ways. For example, the 1st graders dressed up as though they were 100 years old. They also brought in 100 things in a baggie to compare weight and volume, and counted items, such as Cheerios, by 100's!
Way to make math even more fun!

Students Succeed at 11th Annual U.C. Science/Engineering Expo
We are incredibly proud of the three CCS students who participated in the University of Cincinnati's 11th Annual Science and Engineering Expo, which took place on Saturday, March 14th. This event is open to students in 6th-12th grades who have received a "superior" rating at their schools' science fairs and have been chosen by the school to represent them. Sam Knueven (Sophomore), Nathan Smearsoll (8th grade), and Timothy Fuller (7th grade) were our CCS representatives.
After an amazing day of competition and demonstrations, two of our students earned awards!
- Nathan Smearsoll: Wong Siemens PLM Softward, Inc. Award for "Potato Power"
- Sam Knueven: UC CECH Award in Physics, and UC CECH Young Scientist Award for "Regenerating Electricity with Motion"
Sam will also be going to the Ohio Academy of Science State Science Day competition this month. What amazing accomplishments, students!

Art Student's Piece Heads to State Competition
Senior Sarah Parker's creation competed with thousands of artists across 15 Ohio regions in the Governor's Youth Art Exhibition. Her piece "Frozen Heart" made it to state!
The Ohio Governor's Youth Art Exhibition, now in its forty-fifth year, is dedicated to the educational and artistic advancement of talented young people in the state of Ohio. The exhibition is open to all of Ohio's 1,112 high schools, both public and private, chartered by the State of Ohio Department of Education. The state judging takes place in Columbus, however, the judges for this level of competition are chosen from all over the country and are generally professional artists, college level instructors, or both.
Sarah's piece is a colored pencil drawing and is, obviously, exceptional!

MVC Athletes of the Week
For Spring, April, 2015
- Track and Field: Senior, Kameron Antwine -
He won the 100m, 200m at the CCD Invitational, and helped lead the 4x400 team to a first place finish.
- Track: Senior, Rachel Doloresco - She won the 400 meters at Reading, led off the Lady Cougars' victorious 4x200 meter relay, and finished second in the 200 meters.

VFW Scholarships Awarded
Congratulations to Seniors Hannah Smith and Olivia Holder. Both won awards for their creative works in contests sponsored by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Campbell Gard Post 1069 of Fairfield.
Olivia Holder was the CCS winner for VFW's Young American Creative Patriotic Art. Her piece was judged on the originality of concept, presentation, and patriotism expressed, the content of how it relates to patriotism and clarity of ideas, the design technique, total impact of work, and uniqueness. Her art will compete in the Department Ohio statewide contest in June to possibly move on to the national contest. For her outstanding artwork, Olivia too received a certificate of achievement, a Young American Creative Patriotic Art pin, and a $100 scholarship.
A special presentation was held during Junior/Senior High assembly in April and awards were presented by Mrs. Becky Abbott, President of the Ladies Auxiliary, and Commander Butch Frederick, both of the VFW Campbell Guard Post 1069 of Fairfield.
Congratulations, ladies!

Art Students Win in Scholastic Art Competition
Each year CCS Junior and Senior High art students compete with thousands of other regional art students's submissions. As usual, CCS art students exceed expectations!
CCS students won 14 Scholastic Art Competition Awards in the categories of drawing, digital art, photography, sculpture, and fashion! Those who win "key" awards have sent their pieces further into the competition:
Becky Laughlin won a gold key and silver key, both in photography.
Dylan Graves won a silver key in digital art. And
Bryan Snyder won a silver key in photography. Honorable Mention Award winners are:
Olivia Holder, Alyssa Washington, Payton Keiner, Libby King, Alexis Cooper, Zachary Parker, and
Isabella Collins.

Senior Signs with Bluffton
Congratulations to Senior, Amanda Merrell, who made a commitment to continue her education and signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Bluffton University in Bluffton, Ohio.
"I believe God is calling me to this school, says Merrell, who will major in Athletic Training. "I'm excited to be able to go to a Christian school and to start a new part of my life next year."
Merrell also considered Cedarville University, Miami University, and Shawnee State University.

Senior Signs with Franklin
Congratulations to Senior,
Spencer Fox, who made a commitment to continue his education and signed a letter of intent to play football for Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana.
Of his family's alma mater, Spencer said, "My family is well known at Franklin College. My grandpa, grandma, aunt, uncle, and mom all went there. My grandpa played football for Franklin, so everyone on campus knows the name. When I first visited Franklin, it just felt like home; everyone there feels like family."
"I am most excited about football. I can finally say 'I play college football' which has always been a dream of mine, and finally, I'm doing it."
Fox will be majoring in Business and minoring in Sports Management. He also considered Hanover College and Mount St. Joseph University.

Senior Signs with UC-Clermont
Congratulations to Senior,
Hannah Edwards, who made a commitment to continue her education and signed a letter of intent to play basketball for University of Cincinnati - Clermont.
"I'm thrilled to be able to play basketball with a great program and for a great coach. I am also excited to study in a field I enjoy and will, hopefully, provide many career opportunities (for me) in the future." Hannah will be majoring in U.C.'s Physical Therapist Assistant Program.
Edwards also said, "Deciding which college to attend is a big decision, especially when you have the opportunity to play basketball for really great programs. I was also considering Wilmington and Otterbein."

Senior Signs with Edison
Congratulations to Senior,
Christian Rieman, who made a commitment to continue his education and signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Edison Community College in Piqua, Ohio.
"(The) coaches were very nice and excited for me to consider their school. I'm most excited about living on my own and starting my dream job," said Rieman. He stated that he is becoming a police officer and that Edison has a very good Criminal Justice Program. Rieman also considered Muskingum, Charleston (WV), West Liberty, and Fairmont State.

Senior Signs with Anderson
On Friday, March 20th,
Hannah Julian signed a letter of intent to play soccer at Anderson University in Anderson, Indiana.
While Julian visited many universities, including Taylor and Malone, she landed at Anderson. Julian's family has many graduates from there, including her mother and father. Her brother currently attends Anderson as well.
Julian will be majoring in Elementary Education and minoring in Spanish, and is most excited about, "being on my own and meeting new people."

Senior Signs with Malone
On March 20th, 2015,
Christian Kallenberger signed on a soccer scholarship with Malone University in Canton, Ohio.
Kallenberger was considering Bowling Green State University, Valparaiso University, Centre College and others, but, after much prayer, landed at Malone. "I was in deep prayer about where God wanted me to go, and all of the signs He gave me, pointed there."
Kallenberger isn't sure of his major yet, but he knows it will be in the field of chemistry. He is most excited about playing soccer at the next higher collegiate level, "to improve my skills as a player."

Senior Signs with Asbury
Shauna McKain made a commitment to continue her education and signed a letter of intent to play softball at Asbury University in Wilmore, Kentucky.
McKain said she didn't really consider any other schools. "Asbury was the first and last choice," she said. She not only wanted a small Christian university, but her parents graduated from there. Her sister is currently attending Asbury as well, so McKain is very familiar with the campus and the school's values.
McKain will be majoring in Education; she had planned on Media Communications, "But God has other plans," she said. "I'm very excited to play softball for Asbury. I hope that it will be a lot of fun and a great experience."
