ADAPTING TO THE CHANGING JEWISH COMMUNITY:
Philadelphia architect helps two synagogues and a JCC find ways
to continue to thrive -- together.

Brawer & Hauptman, Architects' study for a Pennsylvania JCC explored how two local synagogues -- one Conservative and one Reform --  might partner with the JCC and take advantage of the many spaces offered by a renovated JCC building.  
  • One of the challenges was to integrate the programs of the three organizations while preserving their separate identities.
  • A new building, located in the JCC parking lot, would contain a worship space shared by the two congregations -- alternatively on Friday nights and Saturday mornings -- and administrative offices.
  • Classroom spaces, social spaces, expanded worship spaces for the High Holy Days, and a kosher catering kitchen were available in the adjacent JCC building.
  • The result is an integrated design that takes the best advantage of shared existing spaces, shared expenses and a vibrant, efficient new building.
