Tourism Progress Reports Show Robust Growth In Spartanburg
"Dramatic Change" Since Tourism Action Plan Developed:
The tourism industry in Spartanburg County has grown by 34 percent since a Tourism Action Plan was developed in 2009, according to a new progress report by Arnett Muldrow & Associates for the Spartanburg Convention & Visitors Bureau (SCVB).
Net tourism spending in Spartanburg County topped $205.8 million in 2013-2014, resulting in a total impact of $227.8 million. That represents a 34-percent increase since 2009-2010. In addition, 1,293 jobs have been added as a result of tourism increases, with nearly 5,000 jobs coming from tourism spending. The Progress Report also shows net government revenues increased by $14 million in five years.
"By almost any metric, the tourism industry in Spartanburg has undergone a dramatic change," said Tripp Muldrow of the consulting firm, Arnett Muldrow & Associates. "Spartanburg County is a collection of remarkable resources, and the community has a tremendous track record of cultivating these resources for economic benefit."
The "Tourism Action Plan: Progress Report and Update" is a 27-page report that reviewed recommendations from 2010 and provided updates on: the economics of tourism, challenges and considerations, branding, product development and visitor support. The consultant suggested Spartanburg County "leapfrogged over initiatives" outlined in a state tourism plan.
Chris Jennings, executive director of the SCVB, said he was particularly pleased to see local engagement and strategic partnerships noted as integral to the success of tourism in Spartanburg County.
"We've been fortunate to have great support from the City of Spartanburg and Spartanburg County, which allows us to advertise, promote and sell our destination," Jennings stated.
"Our tourism industry has been integral to this success. They've kept us focused on attracting high-value clients, such as large youth-sports tournaments, regional religious conferences, and the Carolina Panthers Training Camp."
Additional recommendations from the Progress Report included: developing a strategic public relations campaign; improving gateways and a county-wide wayfinding sign system, and partnering with neighboring counties to promote equestrian and sports events, meetings and conferences.
Jennings noted that outdoor recreation will be a focus as well, as greenways, trails and blueways become more accessible throughout the county, and with the development of Bass Pro Shops near BMW's manufacturing plant in Spartanburg County.
"We're encouraged about what is happening in Spartanburg County, and we're excited about growing this industry in the community," he said.
