"Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle"
March is National Nutrition Month and since food and nutrition are at the heart of Community Servings' mission, it's an exciting time of year in our kitchen! To celebrate National Nutrition Month, The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is encouraging everyone to consume fewer calories, make informed food choices, and get daily exercise with their rally cry: "Bite into a Healthy Lifestyle." Community Servings couldn't agree more!
If you're looking for a healthy eating tip that you can really sink your teeth into,
Manager of Nutrition Services, Lindsay Bronstein explains that although nuts are "dense" in terms of calories, eating them is correlated with maintaining a healthy weight and low risk of disease. For every ounce (about a handful) of nuts consumed, our bodies only absorb about 76% of the calories they provide.
(For example, if you eat 170 calories of almonds, you'll only absorb 129 of those calories.) To top it off, for every handful of nuts you eat, you'll decrease your total daily caloric absorption by approximately 3%!

Nutrition News: Blueberries and Beet Juice May Help to Lower Blood Pressure
Vibrantly colored blueberries and beets are packed with healthful nutrients and antioxidants. New research suggests that they may also help to lower blood pressure.
In one study, women with hypertension ate the equivalent of a cup of blueberries per day, and
in another study, participants drank 8oz of nitrate-rich beet juice each morning. Both studies showed significant reductions in blood pressure.
