BUDGET PRIORITIES AND LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY
Patrons asked to share their priorities as the District plans the implementation of its five-step reinvestment strategy

As was shared in mid-February, Hillsboro School District has created a five-step reinvestment plan to act as a roadmap for future spending and to get the District to a place where our spending will match our expected outcomes for student achievement. Knowing that we may not receive all the funds necessary to carry out the full steps of the plan, however, we are seeking input from staff, parents, and other patrons on their investment priorities. A survey has been created to identify and capture your thoughts. Please take a few moments to complete the survey and share your thoughts with us!

After completing the survey, please consider writing to your elected officials and urging them to support a K-12 budget of at least $7.5 billion for the 2015-17 biennium. The current recommendation before the Legislature is $7.235 billion, and spending at that level would mean a $4.5 million shortfall for Hillsboro School District. This is the equivalent of 9 school days or 55 teachers. A list of our local elected officials and their contact information, and a template advocacy letter, are available on our Budget Matters webpage (Microsoft Word version also available on Budget Matters).

NO MAKE-UP DAY FOR INCLEMENT WEATHER
Last day for students will remain June 12, 2015
At its meeting on February 24, the School Board voted unanimously to not add an instructional day to the end of the 2014-15 school year to make up for the inclement weather/school closure day we had on November 13, 2014. As a result, the last day of school for AM/PM kindergarten students will remain June 11, and the last day for extended day kindergarten through grade eleven students will remain June 12 (early release).
GRONER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO TRANSITION TO K-8 MODEL
Families interested in transferring their student may apply now

As part of an ongoing effort to expand instructional options for students, the School Board unanimously approved the plan for Groner Elementary School to begin its transition to a K-8 model at their meeting on February 24. Under the plan, Groner will offer at least one seventh-grade class in the 2015-16 school year and possibly two, depending on interest. Click here to learn more.

PI DAY

This Saturday, March 14, is not only Pi (?) Day - meaning 3.14, or the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter - but it's the "real" Pi Day! It's the day that only comes along once a century when the date is actually 3-14-15, which follows the calculation of pi out through the first four digits (3.1415). From the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to modern-day mathematicians, no other number has captured humankind's fascination and attention quite like ? - it continues infinitely without repeating digits and has been calculated, using supercomputers, to more than one trillion digits past the decimal. Because it represents so much mathematical fun, and because it is also the birthday of Albert Einstein, one of history's most revolutionary physicists, Pi Day has become an international holiday, with special events held around the world. For more information or to find fun Pi-related activities, visit www.piday.org.
