From the Desk of Councilmember Al Austin II

Councilmember Austin talks with Pow!Wow! founder Jasper Wong

Dear Eighth District Residents and Friends,

As we announced earlier this week, the U.S. Postal Service has chosen a new location for the Bixby Knolls post office: 4462-4470 Atlantic Ave., in the Bixby Knolls Shopping Center next to Marshalls. The new post office is expected to open in the fall.

I would like to thank Congressman Alan Lowenthal for his solid support on this issue.  He played an integral role in making this happen.

On another note, see below for information on the airport international terminal issue coming back to council on July 7.

Finally, I applaud and celebrate today's historic Supreme Court decision establishing marriage equality.  Our next steps as a nation should be justice for all.

Sincerely,

 AL AUSTIN II

Airport International Terminal Issue Returns to City Council on July 7

The City Manager is expected to place on the City Council agenda for the July 7 Council meeting a request for Council direction regarding JetBlue's request for federal inspection services at the Long Beach Airport to allow international flights.

JetBlue sent a letter to the City of Long Beach in February requesting the City to apply to the federal government for a customs facility.

On March 3, the City Council voted in support of motion by Councilmember Austin, along with Councilmember Roberto Uranga, to not take any action regarding JetBlue's request until receiving further direction from the City Council, and to delay any request for direction until 60 days after there was full representation on the City Council, following the special election in April to fill the vacancy in the Fourth District.

The City Council meeting on July 7 is expected to start at 7:00 p.m.  The agenda for the July 7 Council meeting will be available on the City Clerk's website the afternoon of Monday, June 29.

4th of July Safe Celebration Reminder from LBPD and LBFD

With the 4th of July holiday fast approaching, the Long Beach Police and Fire Departments would like to remind residents and visitors that all fireworks, including those marked "Safe and Sane," are illegal in the City of Long Beach.

The Police and Fire Departments will be out in force the days leading up to and on July 4th to ensure compliance with the Long Beach City Ordinance that bans fireworks. Although both Departments seek voluntary compliance to ensure public safety, this duty often requires strict enforcement of all laws through arrest and citations. Anyone cited or arrested for fireworks violations may be faced with a $1,000 fine, sentenced to jail for six months, or both. The fines and penalties may increase depending on the fireworks' classification. Fireworks may be voluntarily disposed of at collection bins located at all fire stations, Lifeguard Headquarters (2100 E. Ocean Boulevard, on the West side of the Junipero lot), or any police station.

For those who would like to enjoy fireworks, please plan to attend a safe and professionally controlled fireworks show to ensure the safety of your family, friends and property.

Police officers will strictly enforce all laws, especially those associated with drinking in public, public intoxication, drunk driving, minors in possession of alcoholic beverage and underage drinking, and illegal barbecues on all public property, parks and beaches. The use of personal barbecues in all city parks and beaches is prohibited. Use of permanent city installed barbecues is acceptable. All parks and beaches from Shoreline Drive to the end of the Peninsula will be heavily patrolled.

The Long Beach Police and Fire Departments encourage responsible parenting and request that parents closely supervise their children, set expectations for proper behavior and monitor their activities.

If you See Something, Say Something! Call Long Beach Police Dispatch at (562) 435-6711 or 9-1-1 if you observe dangerous or illegal activities. Together, we can enjoy a safe holiday.
Eighth District Spotlight

We shine this week's spotlight on the Pow! Wow! art movement from Hawaii visiting Long Beach this week.

Internationally renowned artists are demonstrating their craft in a number of venues, including providing new murals on several buildings in the City.

As part of Pow! Wow! Long Beach, the Expo Arts Center, located at 4321 Atlantic Avenue, is getting a new mural painted on the building's north exterior wall by the artist PUSH.  The Expo Arts Center is owned by the City of Long Beach, and leased to the Bixby Knolls Business Improvement Association, for the programming of arts and community events.
