March 27, 2015

We hope everyone is gearing up and getting excited for a great 2015 fishing season.  Maryland DNR has just posted the official regulations for  the 2015 Striped Bass season.   CCA worked diligently with DNR and other stakeholders to determine the best way to meet the reduction and ensure that striped bass populations start to recover.

This just in today from DNR:

The Administrative, Executive, and Legislative Review Committee (AELR) has approved a two week extension to the commercial oyster season effective March 31, 2015. This emergency regulation action extends the oyster season through Tuesday, April 14, 2015. This action was requested due to heavy icing experienced throughout the Bay over the course of this winter that has resulted in a significant number of commercial oyster harvesters being unable to engage in the fishery. The extension of the season allows these harvesters to make up for lost time.

These regulations amend the season end date from March 31 to April 14 and prohibit the possession of crabs on a vessel engaged in the commercial oyster fishery. The prohibition of crabs on board oyster boats is due to enforcement concerns regarding the use of oyster gear that may interact with crabs. By prohibiting the possession of crabs on board vessels engaged in the oyster fishery, these enforcement concerns are alleviated.

Irish company wins MD contract to turn chicken litter into energy

Demonstration farm using BHSL's system to be built on Eastern Shore farm.

Sixteen years ago, Jack O'Connor's government warned him that new regulations were coming to limit the amount of nitrogen he could spread on his farmland.

O'Connor, who lives in Ireland, didn't fight the regulations. Instead, he used them as the basis for a business plan to turn manure into energy. Today, his company, BHSL, which he founded eight years ago, has built and is operating three manure-to-energy systems in Europe. The company recently won a contract for close to $1 million from the Maryland Department of Agriculture to build a demonstration of their system on a farm on the Eastern Shore. Many more farmers on the Delmarva Peninsula are interested in the technology. Environmental advocates, too, are watching it closely.

"Livestock intensification is a matter of fact," said Declan O'Connor, who is Jack O'Connor's brother and the CEO of BHSL. "What we need to do is make it more sustainable." Throughout the watershed, livestock growers are raising cows, hogs and chickens that generate 44 million tons of manure each year.
