A Deserving

Tribute to our Fathers

Scott and I have an unusual and unfortunate thing in common, both of our fathers passed away this past month and both had liver cancer. This circumstance was not taught in any business book or university, but it was a life lesson shared between two friends and business partners. Some of you had the pleasure of meeting our dads, but many of you have not. I thought we would dedicate this article to our fathers and share what we learned from them and how they affected our personality. This has a direct impact on you since this experience will affect how we run our business. Lastly, it is a way for you to see how special they truly were.

Losing a parent is a very difficult phase of life that will impact most of us at some point.  Thanks in large part to my father, Don Russell; our family was prepared in many ways to cope with his passing.  He was a model father of three and husband of 54 years. Although I wasn't always cognizant of it as I went through life, it was during his passing that I realized the impact he had on me.  From him, I learned how to take responsibility for myself at an early age, dedication to family, love of the outdoors, love of boating, a methodical communication style, a strong work ethic, and faith.  My most cherished memory of my father would have to be his great love of his grandchildren.  I will hold onto his memory as I realize that only time will heal the loss of someone so important in my life.  During this time in my life, I have learned some very valuable lessons that I will be sharing in future newsletters to hopefully help others be a little more prepared.  - Scott Russell

Lawrence Cummings

My father,

Lawrence Kevin Cummings, grew up on a farm in the Midwest during the depression. He was the third of 12 children. This upbringing is what molded him into the man we knew. The hard lessons he learned he instilled in me and my siblings. We learned about work ethic and hard work, taking care of your own, being there when people need you, doing the right thing, humor, not taking life too seriously, and taking care of your family. I have many fond memories of my dad and one of the best memories I have was how he made other people feel special. My dad was the most positive person I knew and he was so happy all the time and spread that joy to others. Whenever anyone would ask him how he was doing he would say, "I am getting better and better every day". He truly believed that and lived his life that way. It is never easy losing a loved one but I know that I will get better and better every day! - Bill Cummings

Daily Life

Our happily married friends and clients have recently returned from a dragon boat paddling competition in Italy. I was surprised to learn that dragon boat paddling, not to be confused with rowing, is a 2000 year old sport.
Years ago, Wayne realized he needed to lose some excess weight. After he successfully accomplished the weight loss goal, he knew he needed to start an exercise program so he joined a dragon boat team. He finds the beautiful water serene, a far cry from spending hours in a sweaty gym with four grey walls. The transformation was impressive and it has stuck. I asked Wayne if he paddles to see the world and he said he sees the world because of his true PASSION for the sport.
Wayne and Anita found a way to be fit, spend quality time together and see the world while paddling forward through different cities, towns and countries. They've logged in quite a few miles to favorite places such as Hong Kong, Beijing, Hungary, Paris and their favorite place, Italy. Anita loves to support her husband, who she met in junior high and has shared a great marriage for 38 years. She calls herself a 'future paddler' but currently drums for their team. She is the ultimate cheerleader.
Dragon Boat Racing
We salute Wayne and Anita for remembering to suck the life out of each and every day. Throwing in a passion for a water sport mixed with an opportunity to see the world together is quite a beautiful thing.

Medicare Open

Enrollment for 2014

A summary of what

you need to know.

Medicare Open Enrollment has arrived. The open enrollment period for 2014 runs from October 15-December 7, 2013. This is not only a period where you may enroll for the program, but also switch providers for your comprehensive health and drug coverage.1

Some key dates to remember. This fall and winter, there are three periods in which Medicare beneficiaries can either enroll or disenroll in forms of coverage:

  • Now through December 7: Open enrollment period. This is when you can elect to leave Original Medicare (Parts A and B) for a Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) and change your prescription drug coverage (Part D). You can also elect to get out of a Part C plan and go back to Parts A and B during this period.1,2
  • December 8: Annual enrollment period begins for 5-star plans. As you probably know, Part C and Part D plans are assigned ratings. Beginning December 8, 2013 and ending November 30, 2014, a window opens for you to enroll in a 5-star Part C or Part D plan. You can do this once per 365 days. How do you find the 5-star plans? Visit www.medicare.gov/find-a-plan.2,3
  • January 1-February 14: Disenrollment period. If you join a Part C plan in late 2013 and want to reverse that decision, you can disenroll from that Medicare Advantage plan in this window of time and go back to Original Medicare with a stand-alone Prescription Drug Plan (Part D).2,3

Do you have to enroll in Medicare through the new health insurance exchanges? No. Medicare isn't part of that. If you have Medicare, you are already insured in the eyes of the federal government. You don't have to make any changes to your Medicare coverage because of the implementation of the exchanges, and your Medicare benefits won't change as a result of them, whether you have Original Medicare or a Medicare Advantage plan through an HMO or PPO.4
