From its beginnings as a gutsy prototype in 2012 to its professional debut as a star performer in 2013, the Flying Fox facilitates precision discharge measurements using ADCPs while making the life of Hydrographers across the globe safer and easier. Introducing the Flying Fox FFX from Hydrological Services America, an innovative, portable, remote control towing system for making discharge measurements with ADCP tethered boats on a temporary span of rope.

Flying Fox Remote Controlled Towing System

Using a hand-held weatherproof control with backlit LCD, the Flying Fox is designed to tow floating or suspended items across a straight span of rope. Designed with tethered boats and ADCP measurements in mind, it may also be possible to use the Flying Fox for other water monitoring needs, such as sending a water quality sonde across an otherwise inaccessible cross-section.

Flying Fox Soars!

The weatherproof remote control with backlit LCD displays transect speed (user adjustable from 0-1.6 ft/s (0 to 0.5m/s), distance traversed, wireless signal strength, voltage & current draw while operating, and battery voltage.

With the Flying Fox it's now possible for Hydrographers to make ADCP measurements almost anywhere on a river or stream, no longer restricted to bridges or cableways. For me, it's exciting to note that the Flying Fox originated as a customer request, as have many of our best products. One of our most valuable resources is the customer feedback we receive and integrate directly into our design and engineering process.
