Meet CIS Graduate Rehana Ward-Cooper

Rehana Ward-Coooper is proud to be a UNC Tarheel! Rehana is a June 2015 CIS graduate from West Mecklenburg High School, and now she is a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill pursuing her dreams. But this time a year ago, having the opportunity to attend college looked near to impossible. Instead of completing college applications, Rehana was trying to prepare for motherhood - she was six months pregnant and very uncertain about her future, since she would soon have another little person to care for.   Read More

Mike Munao, 30-year CIS Volunteer!
Volunteer Spotlight

Not many can claim this accomplishment - one of CIS-Charlotte's first volunteers who began tutoring students in 1986, our first year in operation - and who has continued to tutor and mentor CIS students for the 30 years since then! That amazing volunteer would be Mike Munao, who is currently volunteering at Nathaniel Alexander Elementary, where he has been tutoring CIS students since the school opened in 1996. Before Nathaniel Alexander, he volunteered with CIS at Cochrane Junior High. Mike still has the original letter he received from CIS in 1986, welcoming him as a volunteer.   Read More

Volunteers Needed!
CIS supports CMS North Star Literacy Initiative

CMS has launched a new literacy initiative, North Star Reading Partners, that focuses in particular on 3rd and 7th graders. Superintendent Ann Clark has asked every CMS employee to spend an hour a week serving as a mentor and working on reading skills with a student in one of these grades. The goal is to have every 3rd grader (or 7th grader) reading on grade level by the end of the school year. CIS is following CMS' lead, and has asked every CIS employee to participate in the North Star initiative,  too.
Volunteers are also needed in order to reach every student who needs a mentor! Training and a series of Lesson Plans are provided. Visit the CMS North Star website for more information, then contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Courtney Peterson, and she will match you with a student!

E2D donates Laptops to 100 CIS 9th Graders

West Charlotte student with new laptop from E2D.
One hund red CIS 9th graders recently received a free laptop through a local organization, E2D, which stands for "Eliminate the Digital Divide." This is the third year that E2D has worked with CMS and CIS to identify students in need to benefit from this fantastic donation. Since August of 2013, E2D has provided laptops, software and initial training for 750 families in Mecklenburg County!

Pat Millen, E2D's founder, said the idea was the brainchild of his daughter, Franny, who was just 12 years old three years ago when she wondered aloud to her dad, how could kids do their homework without a computer at home?   Read More

Lowcountry: Good Food~Good Times~Great Cause
And the photos to prove it!

Nearly 400 guests attended our Lowcountry on the Green event on September 26 and did not allow a little rain to dampen their spirits! The lowcountry spread was delicious as usual, and the new mobile bidding for the Silent Auction was hugely successful!  Many thanks again to our Event Sponsors, Party Hosts, and Silent Auction Donors, and to all of our guests for supporting the event. Hope to see you next year!
