A Diversified Team is the Key to Strong Leadership

As an entrepreneur, you move your business forward, you take calculated risks, and you see opportunities where others may not. It makes sense that you would want a diverse team of strong, creative employees working for you, who can take charge in their own ways.

In business, strong leaders can be innovative in the way they handle their employees and inspire them to do better, and in the way that they increase efficiency with the use of resources. While you (the owner) worry about the "big picture", your team can focus on the day-to-day challenges and opportunities that keep things running smoothly in all aspects of the business.

Because businesses have varied needs, and sometimes fill specific market niches, developing an ideal team can take time and money. You need to know how to assess your strengths and weaknesses, and surround yourself with people who have complementary attributes. Whether you're a new business owner with little management experience, or someone who is more seasoned, it never hurts to hire a mix of people with different skills and different perspectives.

If you run a small organization, you don't necessarily need to have multiple business units led by different managers. You may, however, want to hire people who are experts in certain areas: an accountant to do your books, a human resources expert to handle hiring, payroll, etc. or a marketing lead who can take care of promotion and communications. Learning about organizational design can help you structure your business and meet your objectives.

If you want to grow your business, the range and complexity of skills available among your employees needs to grow as well. You may need to hire more people, outsource some of the work, or even look into managerial development and training if you think it's worth the investment of money and time.

You are the boss, and your employees must be clear about their roles and responsibilities. But when you are a good leader, you gain respect from those around you, inspiring them to become great leaders themselves. Together, you and your team will shape the vision of your business in a well-rounded way.
