Welcome

Welcome to the March 2015 Real Times!

As I sit at my desk writing this in the middle of yet another snow storm, something tells me that spring will be late again this year. Did someone say Global Warming?

That said, a sure sign of spring approaching is the need to "Spring Ahead" and move our clocks ahead this weekend (March 8th) for Daylight Savings Time. While you are at it, this is a good time to change the batteries in your home smoke detectors, and set back thermostats.

This month, we have a number of informative articles, including; understanding your WIFI connection, symptoms that may lead you to suspect malware on your computer and with tax filing deadline approaching quicker than spring, how you may save money with a home office deduction. In light of recent highly publicized security breaches, we added one on how to make your organization more risk aware.

That's all for now. We invite your comments and suggestions and of course, reach out to your Real Time account representative with any questions you may have. Stay warm and safe!

Best Regards,

John Azzinaro

Quote of the Month

Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.

Are you feeling disconnected?

These days, a notebook without an internet connection is like a bicycle without pedals. You can still use it, but you won't get very far. That's why it's all the more frustrating when you lose your wireless internet connection and your IT department or helpful officemate aren't there to provide a quick fix.

A savvy user, however, doesn't have to be at the mercy of other people's schedules. With a few simple troubleshooting tips?and a basic understanding of how your wireless network is set up?you can easily take care of many common issues yourself and quickly return to peak productivity. The business opportunities in cloud and mobile are increasing our connectivity?boosting the number of devices on our network and increasing access to data. Yet, on any given day, the front page headlines scream about the latest data security breach; thieves stealing valuable business assets, including confidential intellectual property as well as personal information about customers and employees.

"It might seem like a catch-22," says Kris Lovejoy, IBM General Manager of Security Services. "To enable your business, you have to embrace technologies like cloud and mobile?for customers, employees, contractors, vendors and other partners. However, some believe that this actually increases their exposure. The fact is that they do not; cloud and mobile may be their best chance to raise their security to new heights."

How to Detect Malware Symptoms
used with permission from Microsoft Safety & Security Center

If your computer starts to behave strangely, you might be experiencing spyware symptoms or have other unwanted software installed on your computer. Here are a few tips on how to detect malicious software:
  • I see pop-up advertisements all the time. Some unwanted software will bombard you with pop-up ads that aren't related to a particular website you're visiting. These ads are often for adult or other websites you may find objectionable. If you see pop-up ads as soon as you turn on your computer or when you're not even browsing the web, you might have spyware or other unwanted software on your computer.
  • My settings have changed and I can't change them back to the way they were. Some unwanted software can change your home page or search page settings. Even if you adjust these settings, you might find that they revert back every time you restart your computer.
