Supporting Parent

Highlight

Zamantta Mares

I am pleased to introduce Zamantta Mares.  Zamantta has been very involved in the special needs community for years.  Professionally, she is a certified medical interpreter. Her involvement does not stop there!  As the mother of three beautiful children, she has been a strong advocate for their individual needs for years. After being referred by a friend, Zamantta joined one of P2P's support groups and has been actively involved for 3 years. Last fall she decided to expand her involvement and completed our Supporting Parent training program.  In her new role as a Supporting Parent volunteer, she is looking forward to providing 1-on-1 support to many parents in the years to come!

Zamantta Mares

"I have used P2P for many years.  I am a foster parent and I take children with special needs. P2P has been there to help with anything I needed."

  Leadership Through
Advocacy
by Claire Dees
Community Engagement Manager

P2P has had an active advocacy team this year and we have enjoyed seeing many of you growing in leadership through legislative advocacy. Whether by attending P2P's advocacy webinars, face-to-face trainings, coming to Disability Day, visiting with legislators to share your stories, or participating in legislative hearings--you are making a difference!

If you would like to become more involved in P2P's Advocacy Initiative, contact Claire Dees at Claire@p2pga.org

Introducing...

Raissa Chandler

Navigator Team Leader Extraordinaire!

Raissa and her husband Scott are pictured with twins Daniel and Daphne. Both teens are mildly impacted by Autism.

Raissa Chandler is a Navigator Team Leader for Fayette County. Her team started off just meeting at area Chick-Fil-A's for coffee and support on a monthly basis. Nicknamed "The Last Sunday's Group", parents learn about lots of different subjects through P2P while children enjoy a LEGO play date. The team has also been instrumental in organizing yearly community resource fairs since 2012.

Raissa's advice for volunteers who are new to P2P is to "simply serve". This means to find your niche and serve others in that niche. If your gift is making amazing pies, help your local navigator team give pies to families who are going through illnesses, new diagnoses, new neighbors, or new IEPs! If your gift is talking to others, consider becoming a supporting parent or learn how to advocate for system change at the state capitol. Simply serve.

Read more about Raissa in Fayette Woman Magazine!
