Celebrating 40 years of helping elders, persons with disabilities, and caregivers lead independent lives.

Volume 6 | Issue 9 | February 2015

Will you wear red on February 6?

National Wear Red Day is an opportunity to spread awareness about women's risk of heart disease, their number one killer.

Most women fail to make the connection between heart disease risk factors and their personal risk of developing the disease. This disease is largely preventable, but kills more women than all forms of cancer combined.

This week, join us on Facebook, where we'll be sharing information for women about reducing your risk of heart disease. We'll cap it all off on Friday by posting a photo of our staff wearing red - we hope you'll share your photo, too!

Talented musicians from Northfield Mount Hermon School will present the 11th annual Meals on Wheels benefit concert, free and open to the public. Donations will benefit Franklin County Home Care Corporation's Meals on Wheels program.

Music Director Steve Bathory-Peeler, instrumental in designing the fund-raising event back in 2004, thought of Meals on Wheels because of his exposure to the program as a child. "I didn't know if a Meals on Wheels program even existed in the area but we tracked it down," said Bathory-Peeler, "and we're really excited to have a decade of history supporting the program."

This year, the concert program will include selections by the school's symphony orchestra and jazz ensemble.... [read more]
Don't let misconceptions about falls keep you down
"It's normal."

"Not me."

These are common attitudes among older adults in regards to how they feel about falls. Another common emotion? Fear: fear of falling, fear of losing independence, and fear of embarrassment.

Falls in Massachusetts are such an important public health issue that there is a permanent Commission on Falls Prevention established by statute. Falls and fall-related injuries are a risk to older residents and impose a significant public health burden on the health care system treating persons who fall. Falls are the leading cause of injuries and injury deaths for people 65 and older. Read more about the findings of the Commission here.
Falls and fear of falls are a very real problem, but addressing both issues can be as simple as building the confidence to stay active. Our Healthy Living program has two workshops designed to help older adults stay on their feet and prevent a fall from occurring. Young people to make Love Letters for Meals on Wheels
Homebound elders who in our Meals on Wheels program are set to receive handmade Valentine's Day cards created by youth volunteers from across the country thanks to the second annual Love Letters campaign.

Love Letters is a project of DoSomething.org, the largest organization for young people and social change, AARP Foundation's Mentor Up, and the Meals On Wheels Association of America. The popular campaign, which encourages young people to create handmade Valentine's Day cards to lift the spirits of older adults this holiday season, runs through February 15, 2015.
Cards will be included in meal deliveries to Meals on Wheels clients across the country. Young people who sign up at DoSomething.org/loveletters and report back with a photo will be eligible to win a $10,000 scholarship.... [read more]

& services for Massachusetts elders, caregivers, persons with disabilities and
their families.
Here at FCHCC, we offer many different programs and services designed to meet your unique needs. For example, our Consumer Directed Care program within our Home Care Services department allows you to choose your own caregiver. A neighbor, friend, or even a family member can receive payment to care for you.

Think of us as the guide to what you need. We don't know all of the answers, but we know who to ask. If we can't help you, we'll tell you who can. It all starts with the Information & Caregiver Resource Center. Call 413-773-5555 or 978-544-2259 during normal business hours or email [email protected] anytime.
