Office of Naval Research Future Force Science and Technology Expo

Rutgers faculty interested in the ONR Future Force Expo can learn about its purpose and hear tips on preparing to participate at a Jan. 20 workshop sponsored by the Office of Research and Economic Development. It will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m in the Dean's Conference Room at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in Piscataway. More information will be posted here soon.

Rutgers Initiatives to Enhance Industry Collaboration Gain Media Coverage

The university's new efforts to support enhanced research collaboration have earned more media attention. The Nov. 24 issue of NJBIZ had a full-page story, "This School Means Business: Rutgers ready to engage corporate community" on p.14 of the supplement, "New Brunswick 2014: Redeveloping the Urban Experience." The university's corporate engagement initiative was a topic of an interview Senior Vice President Christopher Molloy did with Steve Adubato for "One on One," a program that runs on PBS affiliates WNET and NJTV. Cool Science: Supercomputer Study on Superconductors 

Using the Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Titan supercomputer, a team of Rutgers physicists were able to model dynamic spin structure factors for identifying which materials have super- conducting properties. The study, which was published in Nature Physics, was conducted by Rutgers condensed matter theoreticians Gabi Kotliar, Board of Governors professor of physics, and Kristjan Haule, professor of physics, with their post-doctoral student Zhiping Yin. Fulbright Scholar Grants to Seven Faculty Members

Seven professors have won Fulbright Scholar grants for research and teaching abroad next year at institutions in Austria, Brazil, Iceland and India. They are Federico Sesti, professor of neuroscience and cell biology; Kim Butler, professor of African studies and history; Eric Lam, professor of plant biology and pathology; Daniel Hoffman, professor of nutritional sciences; Mark Weiner, professor of law; Martin Lin, professor of philosophy; and Daniel Shain, professor of biology. Two Professors in Physics and Astronomy Named AAAS Fellows

Two faculty members in the Rutgers-New Brunswick Department of Physics and Astronomy were recently elevated to the rank of fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. They are Andrew Baker, an astrophysicist, and Robert Bartynski, an experimental condensed matter physicist. The department has had eight faculty members honored as AAAS fellows. Read more here.

Breakthrough Prize Awarded to High-Z Supernova Search Team

The High-Z Supernova Search Team, which includes Rutgers physics associate professor Saurabh Jha, is one of two collaborations sharing the 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics. The award, which provides $3 million to the team, cited their discovery that the universe is expanding at an accelerating rate. Among the founders of the highly publicized Breakthrough Prizes are Sergey Brin and Mark Zuckerberg. Read more here.

Computer Science Professor Recognized by ACM

Manish Parashar, professor of computer science, has received a Distinguished Scientist nomination from the Association for Computing Machinery Distinguished Member Committee. The award recognizes significant accomplishment or having made a significant impact in the field of computing, computer science and/or information technology. Parashar directs the Rutgers Discovery Informatics Institute (RDI2).
