MESSAGE FROM CEO
BECKY HARKEMA

School has started, fall is here and the YMCA is certainly busy! Lots of flag football, soccer, swimming and playing in the gym is occurring at all the YMCA sites. The three stories that I'm highlighting this month have to do with change and expansion.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

On Saturday, September 26 we began offering swim lessons at the Mount Pleasant Rec Center. This is another wonderful collaboration that we can offer and connect participants to the great works of the YMCA. Ryan Duffy, Rec Center Director, and Dixie Crane, Program Coordinator, have been wonderful to work with. Thirty-seven kids came to swim and were all excited! Our first venture together will be to offer two six-week sessions. Please contact Dixie Crane at the Rec Center if you would like to register for the second session.
HEALTHY LIVING

I am sad to announce that Christina Nash, Senior Program Director, at the Wellman YMCA has taken a teaching position at the University of Iowa. She has been with the YMCA for over five years and she will certainly be missed! She made such a huge impact in the lives of others; particularly with her fitness expertise. I know all of her class participants will miss her as she helped others reach their full fitness potential. We wish you the best of luck Christina!
We will have a "Good Luck" Celebration for Christina on Friday, Oct. 9 (11-1 pm). Please join us for a light lunch at the Wellman YMCA.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
On Saturday, September 26 I listened to the message of Pope Francis. He was speaking in Philadelphia. He spoke about the importance of family and particularly taking care of our children and learning from our grandparents. I also thought about the YMCA and how it provides a venue for families to come together. This organization impacts so many lives. We all want the very best for our families and this is why the YMCA board of directors has chosen to embark on a capital campaign to build a new YMCA in Washington. We kicked off our Advance Gifts Capital Campaign on September 1. Seven socials were held with many community leaders attending. I have also presented to many of the service clubs in Washington. We are now making our "asks" to these community leaders and then will embark onto the Major Gifts Division. We have a brochure and video with our presentation. To the left is a proposed picture of our new YMCA.
