Voorhees to break ground for new student living and learning center  

 

Voorhees College will hold a groundbreaking ceremony on Wednesday, June 3 at 9 a.m. for
the new student living and learning center, which will be completed by the end of the 2015-2016 academic year. The living and learning center will support major student activities and services. Additionally, it will house approximately 30 students in student suite-style housing.

The ceremony will take place at the field area adjacent to the dining hall, which is where the new building will be located. 
 

First emergency management graduate in the state of South Carolina finishes at Voorhees

Voorhees College recently graduated the first emergency management major in the state of South Carolina.

Jacoby Hammonds, a 22-year-old native of Blackville, S.C., made history by also becoming the first student to receive a degree in emergency management at Voorhees.

Excited about this major milestone, Hammonds said the emergency management program has provided him with invaluable knowledge and hands-on experience in the field.

"I now have experience in disaster management, which encompasses many different acts such as natural disasters, terrorism, fires, and communication failures," Hammonds said.

Denada Thomas recognized as Pitcher of the Year

Voorhees College baseball player Denada Thomas was awarded Pitcher of the Year for the 2015 Gulf Coast Atlantic Conference (GCAC).
 
Thomas, a sophomore from Covington, Ga., finished the season with a 4.47 earned run average. Additionally, he started and completed six games during the season as the pitcher, pitched 52.1 innings while holding his opponent's batting average to .249.
 
Thomas said receiving this award was one of his major accomplishments, and it shows him that his hard work and practice has paid off.

Blue and Brown receive All-Conference awards in softball

Two members of the Voorhees College Softball Team received All- Conference nomination awards for the 2014-2015 season.

Dana Blue is a native from Augusta, Ga. majoring in health and recreation. She had three homeruns throughout the season and a batting average .375. Also receiving honors was Twanna Brown, who is a freshman also from Augusta, Ga. majoring in child development. Brown had a batting average of .333 and scored 10 runs during the  2014-2015 season.

May Alumni Highlight: Rosia Speech Gardner

The May alumni spotlight is Rosia Speach Gardner, who is retiring after 44 years in the field of education. Throughout her years in education, she received the 2010 Education Award and the 2010 Best-Mannered Teacher/Principal Award.

Most recently, Gardner served as principal of Mauldin Middle School in Greenville County Schools. She also served nine years as a business education teacher and eight years as an assistant principal.

Voorhees wins $10,000 grant in "Retool Your School" Competition

For the second consecutive year, Voorhees College won a Tier II grant of $10,000 in The Home Depot Retool Your School Competition.

Voorhees won the grant by proposing the creation of a community garden. The purpose of the garden will be to grow fresh vegetables and fruit so that students, employees and the community will have access to fresh sustainability grown produce.

The community garden will also serve as a learning tool for students to help develop gardening skills and teach them about healthy living.
