June 2015 ~ FIRST EDITION
HELLO AND WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF FOOD BANKING!

Welcome to our first Newsletter! This quarterly communication is a great opportunity for us to highlight programs, services, special events and showcase accomplishments so that you, our dedicated supporters, can see the work we are doing at the Food Bank. As I look back at 2014, it was a truly transformational year of generosity from our community donors and partners.  We want to share with you our vision and future direction of the Food Bank:

It is our aim as an organization to expand our reach, while deepening our impact.

For the past four decades, we have met the challenges to provide food, clothes and services to those in need through collaborative efforts and relationships with our community partners. Over our 40-year history, the Elk Grove Food Bank Services (EGFBS) has distributed 7,522,000 pounds of food and approximately 4,543,000 meals. 2015 Hunger Run / Walk
June 27th, 2015 - 5K & 10K

Elk Grove Food Bank Services continues to fight hunger in the south county area with our Eleventh Annual Run 4 Hunger 10K 5K Run/Walk and Kids Run (formerly Run 4 Independence) on June 27, 2015.

Each year families, businesses, organizations, and runners come together to share in this Elk Grove tradition to raise awareness and critical funds for local hunger relief. Your support provides food, clothing, education and a "serving of hope" to over 4,500 individuals each month who turn to EGFBS for help. This year, with food insecurity increasing, the Food Bank expects to serve a record number of men, women and children. READ MORE

WALMART FOUNDATION AWARDS $80,000

GRANT TO THE ELK GROVE FOOD BANK SERVICES

The Walmart Foundation has awarded Elk Grove Food Bank Services $80,000 through their State Giving Program. The EG Food Bank provides emergency food distribution and services to clients in South Sacramento County. The funds will be used toward the purchase of a commercial refrigerated truck to collect and distribute food to hungry clients in the non-profit's service area.

With this funding, Elk Grove Food Bank Services is able to expand services to keep up with the growing number of clients needing food assistance. This refrigerated truck will be the second commercial vehicle operated by the organization and will allow the Food Bank to pick up additional fresh and frozen foods donated by local grocers and farms; greatly increasing the amount and nutritional value of the food available for distribution.

Sun Grove Church Food Drive Donations
MARCH MADNESS Food & Clothing Drive

The congregation at Sun Grove Church used their March Madness food and clothing drive to benefit EG Food Bank.  Each quarter, the parishioners at Sun Grove work to support a "need" within our community.  After considering the operation and mission of local organizations, EG Food Bank was chosen as the inaugural "need".  Community Groups, all Sunday School grade levels and individuals at Sun Grove helped to collect over 2,500 pounds of food and bags and bags of men's clothing for EGFBS.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ELK GROVE FOOD BANK CLIENTS

Some people say that our clients need to work; some people say our clients are lazy and some say that our clients' families need to take care of their own. . .

"Mary" and her Mother came to our Emergency Food Distribution for the first time a few months ago.  Through tears, they told me their story.  Mary takes her Mom grocery shopping the last week of the month to help her parents make it through to receiving their next retirement check.  Mary and her Mom would search out the best grocery deal of the week and go out on their shopping excursion on Mary's day off.  Mary was happy to help out her Mom and Dad this last week of the month, to make sure her parents had food in the house.

EG Food Bank Garden plot
THE ELK GROVE COMMUNITY GARDEN

The Elk Grove Community Garden donated a total of 4,822 pounds of fresh organic vegetables and herbs during its latest growing season.  The Garden also added eight new Food Bank plots last year for a total of 28 plots that are now growing produce for EG Food Bank.  The lumber for the eight new plots was donated by Paramount Petroleum, (located on Waterman Road) and the plots were assembled and filled with soil by Boy Scouts earning their Eagle Scout badges. Plants for the EG Food Bank plot were donated by Berg Construction & Landscape.

This year, volunteers from the Food Bank have taken on the responsibility of growing fruit and vegetables in the Garden.  In addition, high school student volunteers have been assigned Food Bank plots in which to work their high school community service hours.
