There are three accepted branches of Indian philosophy preached over the years - Adwaitha, Vishishta-Adwaitha and Dwaitha. Acharya Sankara Bagawathpada re-energised the Adwaitha philosophy, propagated and converted many during His travels all over present day India. He established the philosophy through the Prastana Trayam - His Bashyam (commentaries) on The Bagavath Gita, Upanishads and Brahma Sutras.

Sankara had attained Self Realisation at a very early age through His Guru, Govinda Bagawatpada. Although an Adwaithi He has authored numerous stotras on various deities, Shiva, Ambal, Narayana, Lakshmi, Rama, Karthikeya and many more. Through this he sought to show that bhakti (devotion) would lead to Gnana and eventually Self Realisation, the ability to see one Existence in all.

His has authored many literary works, stotras, hymns, works on Vedanta, commentaries and two philosophical works - the Viveka Chudamani and Upadesa Sahasri, ingraining the adwaitha philosophy. He established Maths on the four corners of present day India. He is also known as Shan- Mada-Staapakaacharya, being a proponent of the six paths of worship - Surya, Ganapathy, Shiva, Ambaal, Vishnu and Karthikeya.

His acheivements in the short span of 32 years are many and cannot be extolled in completeness.

Please join us in celebrating Him on Wednesday, April 22nd at the Sri Venkateshwara Temple.

Sri Ramanuja Acharya Jayanthi celebrations - Thursday, 7:00 PM

Sri Venkateshwara Temple

Swami Ramanuja is the King of saints (also goes by the name EthiRaja) who was a staunch preacher & follower of Vishta-Advaitha siddantha in Indian Philosophy. This year we are celebrating his 998th birthday (born in the month of Chitirai, under the "Arudhra" Star in the year 1017).

Program for the evening

Abhishekam to Utsava Murthi of Lord Balaji

Vishnu Sahasranama and Gadya trayam chanting

Archana to Lord Vishnu and Acharya

Lord Ramanuja procession

Mangala Arathi

Acharya strongly believed in thathva thrayam philosophy i.e. there are only three realities in this universe - Chith (living i.e. our Athaman), Achith (non-living, everything that we can see with our eyes) paramathma (God who created and resides in chith and Achith). To denote this , even today all the saints who follow Swami Ramanuja, carry Thridandam ( three flags tied together, representing chith, achith and Sriman Narayana) in their hands. Ramanuja is considered the most influential thinker of devotional Hinduism, a selfless guru who considered the liberation of other souls more important than his own. He spread devotion and discipline in society through his nine works known as Navaratnas. In his three major commentaries, the Vedartha-Samgraha,the Sribhasya and the Bhagavadgita-bhasya, he provided an intellectual basis for devotional worship. He gave new insight into southern Indian Vaishnavism and became known as its foremost saint.

The prayer he repeated at the beginning of his Sri-Bhasya best describes the essence of his teachings-"May knowledge transformed into intense love directed to Sri Narayana (Vishnu), the highest Brahman, become mine, the Being to whom the creation, preservation and dissolution of the Universe is mere play, whose main resolve is to offer protection to all those who approach Him in all humility and sincerity, and Who shines out like the beacon light out of the pages of the Scripture (vedas)."
