Year Round

The cool weather this week certainly has been a shock compared to the sultry of last weekend.  But the plants have been loving the rain!  The ground was really dry; the plants and trees were starting to stress.  The slow steady rain has been the perfect shower to give everything a good drink and prevented us from irrigating.  Walking around the orchard, everything looks happy.  Yes.  Happy.

Because of the rain and lack of sunlight, our production has decreased a bit, but will pick up again when the sun shines. But we are very thankful for the rain and the cool weather that we've had this week.

Spring highlights at market this week:  Asparagus. Rhubarb. Strawberries. Garlic Scapes.

We'll see you at Market!

Whatcha Munchin,' Anthony?

Anthony's munchin' Garlic Scapes.  Yes, we harvested the first of our Garlic Scapes and had them at market last weekend. But Anthony has been munchin' on last year's Garlic Scapes.

Mary Margaret was given a Pickled Garlic Scape recipe by one of our 14th & U customers last year, and she made up a batch; Anthony has been enjoying them all winter long and on into the summer.

Be sure to pick up a couple of bunches of the curly-Qs and make the Pickled Garlic Scapes, or check out other uses for Garlic Scapes.

The Scoop on Early Tart Cherries

There were a number of questions last week about Tart Cherries.

Jubileum,
an Early Tart Cherry

"Did I miss them?"  Not at all.  Sign up for our newsletter, and we'll let you know when we will have them.

"When will you have cherries?"  Probably by the end of June; definitely by 4th of July.

You will be seeing Tart Cherries at some markets this weekend.  We have a very early cherry variety called Jubileum.

The rest of our cherry crop is a tad greener (Okay. Really. W ay greener.) and they will not be harvested until the end of the month/early July.

So, you might see cherries this weekend, and then we'll go for a few weeks when you won't see any cherries.  But no worries. They'll be back! There's just an unfortunate gap between the early Jubileum and the regular season Tart Cherries.
