This week, Mayor Kriseman presented his recommendations for Deepwater Horizon settlement funds at a press conference at the city's Water Resources building, a LEED-certified facility. These recommendations would accelerate St. Petersburg's commitment to resiliency and sustainability.
Tampa Bay Black Business Investment Corporation Receives SBA Grant 

This week, Congresswoman Kathy Castor, Mayor Rick Kriseman, and Deputy Mayor Tomalin joined Small Business Administration officials and the Tampa Bay Black Business Investment Corporation (TBBIC) staff, as well as a host of partners to announce a federal grant awarded to the TBBIC to expand training and capital services to low-income entrepreneurs.

The new PRIME Project (which stands for Program for Investment in
Microentrepreneurs) will aid as many as 220 low-income and very low-income microentrepreneurs to enter one of eight technical assistance programs, then, when ready, to access one of six capital sources that can help bridge their business to a next tier of growth.
 
The effort to secure federal funding for the initiative was spearheaded by the TBBIC and supported by the City Urban Affairs division and Greenhouse, the Florida Small Business Development Center at Pinellas County Economic Development, the Pinellas Opportunity Council, and the 2020 Plan Taskforce, as well as U.S. Senator Bill Nelson and U.S. Rep. Kathy Castor, among others.

St. Petersburg and cities across Tampa Bay experienced heavy and persistent rain beginning in late July and ending in mid August. We far exceeded our average rainfall during this time, with July ranking as the eighth-wettest July in our city's history. Tampa Bay Times: Kriseman releases wish list for $6.5 million in BP settlement money 
 
Last week, City Council members grumbled their fears that Mayor Rick Kriseman had already decided how to spend the city's $6.5 million in settlement money from BP's 2010 Deepwater Horizon disaster.

So they scheduled a meeting for this Thursday to discuss how to divvy it up.

But Kriseman beat them to the punch, releasing a laundry list of projects Tuesday that spends the city's share of a $21 billion settlement between the giant oil company and five gulf states, including Florida. Local governments are slated to receive $1 billion.

In a crowded room at St. Pete's water resources department headquarters, Mayor Rick Kriseman said Wednesday he'd like to spend the city's share of BP oil disaster settlement money on things that would help reduce residents' dependence on cars, thus helping cull demand for the risky practice of offshore drilling.

Florida is getting more than $3 billion from the BP over the 2010 "Deepwater Horizon" oil spill, and St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman on Wednesday announced how he wants to spend the city's 6.5 million share.

Kriseman said it's fiscally responsible to use the one-time payout from the settlement for one-time investments. His proposals include $1 million dollars for improving the city's wastewater facilities and another $1 million to support local artists.

Mayor Rick Kriseman has rolled out his suggestions of how to spend the city's $6.5 million from the BP oil spill lawsuit settlement, with a heavy emphasis on environmental and energy saving projects.

"I believe these funds should be used to make us a greener city, to make us a more sustainable city, to make us a more resilient city," Kriseman said at a news conference Wednesday.

Tampa Tribune: Kriseman pushes ferry linking downtowns in Tampa, St. Pete 
 
A commuter ferry service may be still years away but weekend ferry rides across Tampa Bay could be running in as little as a year through a pilot program pushed by St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman.

The city leader is working with ferry promoter Ed Turanchik on a plan to run a ferry service between the downtowns of Tampa and St. Petersburg through the winter months.

Tampa Bay Times: St. Petersburg arts endowment would be investment for the long term 
 
It would be the gift that keeps on giving.

Among Mayor Rick Kriseman's diverse portfolio of potential recipients for the $6.5 million BP settlement is $1 million for an arts endowment, the only one among the group so designated. As an endowment, the money wouldn't be spent as a one-time outlay. Instead, it would be invested with only the principal used annually, estimated at $40,000 by the mayor.
