AOPA Poll: When do Aircraft Owners Plan to Equip with ADS-B Out?
According to a recent poll conducted by the AOPA Aviation eBrief, more than 58 percent of survey respondents indicated that they would install ADS-B equipment prior to the Jan. 1, 2020, deadline mandated by the Federal Aviation Administration in the U.S. In addition. 3.7 percent planned to equip in the next six months, and another 8.7 percent plan to equip in the next year. Less than 15 percent indicated they never planned to equip because they don't fly in airspace where it's required, while nearly 15 percent said they had already equipped to meet the mandate. Despite the survey's interesting findings, Aviation eBrief noted that the results from the poll questions do not necessarily represent the views of pilots, aircraft owners or AOPA members and therefore should not be used for research purposes.  FAA Unveils #FlySafe Campaign The FAA and general aviation groups recently launched the Fly Safe national safety campaign to educate the GA community on how to prevent loss of control accidents this flying season. FAA Deputy Administrator Mike Whitaker officially kicked-off the #FlySafe campaign on Saturday, June 6, at the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association's Fly-In at the Frederick Municipal Airport. AEA Recognizes Members for Training Commitment The Aircraft Electronics Association announced the recipients of the annual Avionics Training Excellence Award, which recognizes AEA members for their total commitment to training as evidenced by participation in AEA-approved training. A total of 45 member companies received the 2014 AEA Avionics Training Excellence Award. For a member company to be eligible for the Avionics Training Excellence Award, all of its technicians must have completed at least one AEA-approved training event in the previous year, which includes the courses conducted at AEA headquarters; AEA International Convention and Regional Meetings; Avionics News Technical Training Exam; AEA computer-based training; original equipment manufacturer training from AEA associate member companies; and AEA partner training. FAA Issues Maintenance Policy for sUAS (under 55 pounds)
The FAA issued Notice 8900.296 to address the inspection and maintenance program requirements of civil small unmanned aircraft systems with an operating weight of less than 55 pounds under a certificate of authorization.
The COA facilitates the operation of the sUAS in the national airspace system. This notice also supports the inspection and maintenance program requirements contained in Notice N 8900.291, Inspection and Maintenance Program Requirements for Airworthiness Certification of Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operating Under 55 Pounds, dated March 3, 2015, concerning sUAS with an operating weight of less than 55 pounds.
An "airworthy condition for UAS subject to a COA" means that the applicant must show that the UAS are maintained in a condition that will ensure that only airworthy UAS are operated in the NAS, and in compliance with the applicable requirements of Title 14 of the Code of Federal Regulations (14 CFR) Part 91.

The Department of Transportation and the FAA maintain their requirements for shop operation that all of "safety-sensitive or covered" employees (avionics technicians) be subject to drug and alcohol testing. Further, regardless if marijuana was used for recreational or medicinal purposes in a state that has "legalized" the activity, detection of use will result in a positive drug test.

received FAA validation of its Transport Canada STC SH14-50 (FAA SR03524NY) for installation of the Mid-Continent MD302 Standby Attitude
Module. This complements the G500H PFD/MFD, or any EFIS package in a light helicopter, replacing analog instruments. This STC is applicable to light Airbus (Eurocopter) Helicopters, including AS350, AS355, EC120, EC130 series, and more.
UNIVERSAL AVIONICS SYSTEMS CORP. said that a CHC Helikopter Service Sikorsky S-92 equipped with dual Universal Avionics SBAS-Flight Management Systems carried out the first Localizer Performance with Vertical Guidance approach to Runway 07 in Florø, Norway. The flight, HKS 56T, under the command of John Olav Ofstad and instructor Morten Kufaas, was on a transit flight from Bergen to Florø in aircraft LN-OQM. Florø is the first Norwegian airport (in support of oil and gas) to be equipped with LPV.
WEST STAR AVIATION is now operating a satellite facility at Chicago Executive Airport in Chicago, Illinois. An open house is scheduled for June 17.
GULFSTREAM AEROSPACE CORP. announced that DEREK ZIMMERMAN, vice president, customer support and materials, will succeed MARK BURNS as president of Gulfstream's product support organization when Burns becomes president of Gulfstream on July 1. In addition, the company's flagship aircraft, the G650ER, set a city-pair record en route to Washington, D.C., June 1, to commemorate the company's 2014 Robert J. Collier Trophy win. The ultra-long-range G650ER departed Paris-Le Bourget Airport, flew into an average 58-knot headwind and arrived at Washington Dulles International Airport 7 hours 50 minutes later. Also, the company's site at Long Beach Airport in California will expand and create at least 50 jobs in its product support organization. Finally, L.D. BUERGER was named vice president, flight test.

CARPENTER AVIONICS acquired the avionics service business unit of Smyrna Air Center. Smyrna Air Center is one of two fixed base operators at this airport, which is the busiest general aviation airport in Tennessee and third busiest overall in Tennessee. The companies also announced formation of a new alliance in which Carpenter now becomes the avionics service affiliate for Smyrna Air Center.
AERO DYNAMIX delivered its 200th AS-350 NVG cockpit. The NVG cockpit was delivered to EagleMed LLC, a critical care air medical transport operation based in Wichita, Kansas.
COBHAM SATCOM received an STC for the installation of its AVIATOR 300D SwiftBroadband system, with IGA-5001 Intermediate Gain Antenna, on Boeing 767-200, 300 and 300F aircraft.
BECKER AVIONICS said its DVCS digital audio system was chosen by the Mexican Air Force for integration into one of the newly upgraded C-130 transport aircraft.
ESTERLINE CMC ELECTRONICS named four new vice presidents: PATRICK CHAMPAGNE, vice president of products, display solutions; MARC GAGNE, vice president of operations; BEN HENDSBEE, vice president of commercial services; and KRISTOF VIERIN, vice president of sales.
THOMAS GLOBAL SYSTEMS and Regional Express announced the successful first deliveries of the LCD TFD-8601 cockpit display, which is designed to replace traditional cockpit CRT primary flight displays on corporate and regional aircraft.
