Progress on AAALAC Accreditation of FAU's Animal Care and Use Program

The Division of Research recently hosted an expert to help it assess FAU's animal care and use program in preparation to apply for accreditation by the Association for Assessment and Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care. Ron Banks, DVM, a certified professional IACUC administrator and former AAALAC council member, conducted the assessment during the first week of August. He stressed the importance of FAU investing in the animal care and use program support, providing for additional clinical veterinary care and building on the current occupational health and safety program with focus on risk assessment, annual re-assessments and participant support. The physical plant facilities of the animal care and use program require some fundamental attention and improvement. But, overall, his recommendation was that FAU should continue to invest strategically in the animal care and use program to be able to support expansion of its research enterprise.

SFI, COI, CITI? It's All So Confusing; Just Tell Me What I Need To Do!

If you are key personnel on a proposal submitted through Sponsored Programs, you MUST complete a form for the disclosure of significant financial interest (SFI) for each proposal submission. Section I of this form asks six questions regarding your institutional responsibilities as they relate to your research obligations for that particular research project. If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you must complete Section II of the form and provide additional details regarding the financial interest you have disclosed. This disclosure form is forwarded to the Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) committee, which will determine if the SFI disclosed could reasonably be determined to directly, or significantly affect the design, conduct or reporting of the research. If the committee determines that a conflict exists, then the committee will work with the researcher to either eliminate or manage the conflict.

. For example, if your spouse works for a movie production company and your research is related to molecular compounds then there would be no reasonable relevancy. However, if your spouse works for the pharmaceutical company that is funding your research, that information should be disclosed to the committee.

Authority of the Attending Veterinarian

The importance of the authority of the FAU Attending Veterinarian was recently underscored in a memo to all FAU animal research investigators from Daniel Flynn, Ph.D., Vice President of Research and Institutional Official (IO). The Attending Veterinarian, Sylvia Gografe, D.V.M., Ph.D., has the ultimate authority on animal-related matters.
It's not always possible to seek investigator's input. In such cases, decisions on an appropriate course of action must be guided by professional veterinary judgment and be in the animal's best interest. Read Dr. Flynn's memo here.
