"Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence." ~ Erma Bombeck

Instructor Spotlight...
Sherry Truby
Originally from Ohio, Sherry Truby and her husband, Bill have lived in the south for over 20 years. A retired hairdresser, Sherry, has also worked in education as a para-professional. Now in post-retirement, she is far from idle. Sherry spends her time working up routines for aerobic dance in addition to drawing and painting, and taking care of her home and rescue pets. She says, "Thanks to VSU Continuing Education classes, I also spend some of my time playing the ukulele."
As one who found routine exercising a boring path that often led her to too many aches and pains, she found herself in a
dance aerobic class and loved it. Over time, she found it difficult to keep up with the fast, complicated moves. She went out on her on and received training certification that would appeal to senior participants. Over the last couple of years she has modified what she learned to develop her own workout using a variety of dance moves and music for people "my age and older."
Sherry, along with her husband, is an author/illustrator of a children's book which features their two grandchildren, a volunteer at the Valdosta Senior Center, and now for winter, she will be teaching "Move It! Dance Aerobics" on Wednesday afternoons for Learning in Retirement.
Sherry's testimonial: "Dance aerobics help me to stay heart healthy, overcome depression, and slow the progress of arthritis. And now we know it can reduce your risk of Alzheimer's disease by sparking every brain area with rhythm, movement, music and memory."

Certificate Programs
Continuing Education programs are constantly being challenged to tap into their deep wells of ingenuity as they seek to serve the personal enrichment and professional development needs of adult learners.
Certificate programs are a growing segment of the continuing education marketplace. These programs generally recognize a relatively narrow scope of specialized knowledge used in performing duties or tasks required by a certain profession or occupation. Completing the certificate usually includes taking certain required courses and completing other courses from a specified list of suggested electives.
Because these programs prepare students to complete a specific task or educate them about one particular aspect of their field, many people find them useful throughout their careers. Individuals often find professional success by regularly updating their knowledge base. Completion of a certificate program can give you a 'leg up' in your chosen field, boost your foundational skills, and inspire confidence. Certificate programs, in some cases, can also provide a way for people to get fundamental, entry-level career training that can serve as a bridge to degree completion.
Whether you are just beginning a career or you are looking for a change in your career, check out many ways you can expand your vocational options through a certificate program. "Earning a certificate is great leverage for job security. It allows you to keep your skills up-to-date and continue your education throughout your career."

And On(line) It Goes
....... pushing through to the new year
It's nearing the end the year and if you consider just two things - the increasing costs associated with
annual insurance benefits enrollment and the plethora of holidays - you might have cause to want to rethink budgeting your personal income. It's not a surprise that these events appear on our calendar each year, but you still may be caught by surprise, especially if you are short on income and spending has been out of control for whatever reason.
None of us is immune to these more difficult financial times. The ever escalating expense related to healthcare is paramount. Additionally, finding affordable gifts for the holidays brings a stress which can lead to holiday debt with a stress of its own which can last for months.
Outside of perhaps winning the lottery, there is no magic or instant fix for finance issues, but, there are some basic strategies easily accessible via online courses that can help you investigate, evaluate, and sort through some of your personal spending and decision making habits. Choose from among several six-week instructor paced courses including these - each priced at $109:
