Becoming 2014 The Commons Blog
June 2015

Welcome Class of 2015 to your first alumni newsletter! We start off with your rendition of the Alma Mater at Commencement. This is the last newsletter of the school year. Expect the next one in September. Have a wonderful summer everyone!

Singing of the Alma Mater

Alma Mater
To thee, O Harley,
We our voices raise,
Long may the green and white
Before us blaze.
As the great oak
Must from the acorn start,
So be our endeavor,
Become what thou art!
Dear Alma Mater,
Thee we stand before,
Pledging our loyalty
Forevermore.

Commencement 2015
We had a beautiful celebration last Thursday to commemorate The Harley School's 89th Commencement. The evening started out with a video of school year highlights, and continued with the class singing (and dancing to) their version of Ain't No Mountain High Enough. The student speeches started with a clever presentation of speakers by Kristina Benjamin '15, and funny and thoughtful student addresses by Robert Smith '15 and Amos Frye '15. This year's faculty address was magnificently spoken by James Aldrich-Moodie. The passing of the Dragon class banner was beautiful and the students paraded off the stage in style. Congratulations Class of 2015!

We began our day on Saturday with a memorial service for Edna Deutsch. Edna taught mathematics at Harley from 1978-2004 and ran Harley's Scottish Exchange. John Deutsch, Karin Deutsch Karlekar '89Erik Deutsch '92, their families, and friends gathered to celebrate Edna's life.

Terry Fonda Smith, Head of the Lower School, included Edna's service, with additional photos, in her recent Commons Blog.

We raised over $25,000 in memory of Edna and her love for travel. The money was put into an endowment to give up to $1,000 annually to a student in need. This opportunity will be offered to senior students in order to fund travel that will enhance their education. Students will be asked to write an essay that will be submitted to a small committee of teachers and members of the Deutsch family. Thank you to everyone that participated in this special endeavor!

Around the corner at Allendale-Columbia, Harley and Allendale-Columbia alumni gathered to participate in the annual  Mark von Bucher Memorial HAC Alumni Soccer Game

It was a hard fought game. The final score was 4-1!

Rita Adler-Everett, HAC sports photographer, board member, and Harley parent to Galen Everett '15 and Alitzia Everett '18took some amazing shots at the soccer game. Take a look!

A huge thank you to everyone who came back this past weekend to celebrate Reunion. I hope it brings you good thoughts about Harley for years to come!

Alumni Visitors and Updates
When Bill Dalton first started at Harley in 1971, he was given a key to "open the curtain" when people wanted to use the stage. This helped to spark an interest in theater for Bill and he went on to direct and design many Upper and Middle
school plays at Harley for almost a decade. Bill came to visit me recently to talk about a special group: The Ratz. The Ratz was small group of students that worked with Bill behind the scenes to build and design sets, arrange the lighting, and more. They were involved with every play and musical at the School from 1972-1981. It started with Hugh Butler '75 and David Dunn '75 and grew from there.

Jocie Kopfman '09 spoke with Alex and me about her Alumni Cup and McKee Athletic Trophy wins. Jocie has been working at Harley the past year with Chris Hartman '93 as a "Leader In Residence" for The Commons. Next year she will join us as an assistant to the co-director of The Commons.

More Harley Alumni Writers!

Writer Will Widger '00 has recently been chosen to write a live-action comic for 20th Century Fox. Read more about it on The Wrap website, a site featuring up-and-coming news in Hollywood.

This past April, Peter Brown '80's book How Real Estate Developers Think: Design, Profits, and Community (The City in the Twenty-First Century) became available on Amazon.

Harley Fund Countdown

We need 106 more alumni to donate to this year's Harley Fund in order to beat last year's participation record! We have less than two weeks. Let's DO THIS! Go to www.harleyschool.org/give to make your gift today!
