Legislative Update from CRA President Michael Talbert
|
We want to give CRA Members an important update on the Governor's and Senate budgets in North Carolina, both of which would reduce recycling grant funding by 60%. This will mean fewer and smaller grants for local government programs and recycling businesses. The recycling grant programs have increased the effectiveness and efficiency of local programs and have helped create jobs and business investment in North Carolina, even through the recent economic downturn.
Budget action is now moving to the House, and they need to hear from you! Many of you have already written letters and made calls and we encourage you to take one more step and contact your House Representative to express concern about the proposed cuts. CRA has written a letter opposing the cuts and contains talking points and facts that you can use when contacting your Representatives.

2013 APR Web Seminars
May 30, 2013 at 1:00 pm EST Recycling Rigid Plastics at Grocery Stores Grocery stores are often great recyclers, with robust programs for old corrugated cardboard (OCC) and film/wrap recycling. However, a substantial recyclable portion of a grocer's waste stream is typically thrown away - rigid plastics. A pilot program created by the Association of Postconsumer Plastic Recyclers (APR) provides a variety of resources and tools to capture some of more than 350 million pounds of rigid plastics generated by medium and large supermarkets in the U.S. This web seminar will explain the online resources available at www.recyclegroceryplastics.org.

July 18, 2013 at 1:00 pm EST Full Wrap Shrink Sleeve Labels: A Recycler's Dilemma Full sleeve labels on PET bottles are growing in popularity with brand companies. While APR feels that sleeve labels can be helpful, they are mostly a problem to PET recycling. The problem starts at the local municipal sorting center, the MRF, and the vast majority of PET reclaimers report that the labels are a serious problem for recycling. This web seminar will address some of the key issues with shrink sleeve labels, as well as the efforts to mitigate the problem.
