A Letter from Incoming CRA President, Patrick Darrow

Darrow
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself to everyone as the new, incoming President of the Carolina Recycling Association. My name is Patrick Darrow and I am a Director with Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont, headquartered in Charlotte, NC. I also currently serve on the Waste Management Advisory Board for Mecklenburg County, served as Vice President of the CRA for the 2012-13 term and am honored to be elected President of the organization this year.

At our retreat, it became very apparent to me that this Board possesses a dynamic array of skill sets that will be sure to serve our membership well. We accomplished several key goals. One of which was to adopt our Strategic Plan which will provide the necessary roadmap to guide us through the upcoming year and beyond. Another was the introduction and commitment to work toward the creation of a job description and implementation of an Executive Director. We came together at retreat as individuals but left as a team with a unified vision to further the mission of the CRA and serve you, our membership, in meaningful ways!

We find ourselves at a very interesting time in the history of the CRA. With the economy showing signs of sustained recovery, changes taking place in both states with regards to recycling and waste reduction legislation (presenting both opportunities and challenges), coupled with the strong abilities and desires apparent on this Board, we are poised for a period of amazing growth as an organization.

In closing, we are excited as a Board about our direction and we are very much looking forward to seeing everyone at the Annual Conference (at the beautiful Omni Grove Park Inn) and before that the several networking meetings to be held around the Carolinas.

Best Regards,

Patrick Darrow
President, Carolina Recycling Association

  Board Bits: Retreat Recap

    Wampee 1Wampee 2

The Board of Directors met at Santee Cooper's beautiful Wampee Conference Center in Pinopolis, SC in June to discuss the business of the CRA and implementation plan for the next year. Below are some highlights from this three day planning retreat.

  • The CRA is hiring an Executive Director! The job description is on the CRA website and the position will be open until August 30, 2013.
  • The CRA remains in good financial health and in order to keep it that way while expanding staff and programs, the FY13-14 budget was set conservatively. It will be a tight budget year, but one that allows for growth of our mission.
  • We are pleased to report that the 2013 conference was successful in hitting its financial goals. We can't thank our sponsors, exhibitors and attendees enough for helping us realize these goals. Planning is already underway for 2014, see below for more.
  • The Board adopted the Strategic Plan which lays out our organizational goals and began to identify key implementation steps to achieve those goals.

The Board is looking forward to beginning the work laid out in retreat and would like to thank Santee Cooper for hosting this productive meeting.

Calling All Awesome People...

Yeah, we're talking to you. You know you have skills, and the CRA has many committees where you can flaunt those talents.   As a CRA member, you can help shape the success and direction of the organization whether you have a little time to give or want to go all in. The following committees are recruiting members:

  • Conference: Re-read the previous story, there are so many ways to join the fun!
  • Education and Outreach: Are you a communications dynamo, have an eye for good design, or enjoy coordinating gatherings of like-minded folks? Sign up to work with the E&O Committee, who will be working on Regional Networking Meetings, a new CRA website and other ways to promote recycling in the Carolinas.
  • Membership: Are you the type of person that can't go anywhere without seeing someone you know, or maybe the type of person that can make friends anywhere? Well come on Popular People, the Membership Committee needs your expertise to keep our family of members growing.
  • Board Development Committee: Calling all aspiring policy writers and procedure makers. The BDC works diligently to ensure proper structures are put into place for the organization to keep it strong, steady and protected.

Contact Anna Shirley at (877) 972-0007 or [email protected] if you would like more information or want to get involved on any of these committees and she will put you in touch with the committee chairs.
