Inspiring American students to pursue science and math education is a goal shared by Republicans and Democrats. The bipartisan STEM Education Act, passed by the House last month, strengthens science, technology, engineering and mathematics education efforts at federal science agencies. It also, for the first time, expands the definition of STEM to include computer science.

Manufacturing Skill Standards Council Contributes to Workforce Skills Certification Goals

In June 2011, President Obama endorsed The Manufacturing Institute's 5-year goal of 500,000 industry  certifications issued within its Skills Certification System. Yesterday, the Institute announced that its partners had already issued some 419,528 certifications--putting the System on track to beat the original 5-year goal by well over a year!

Bill in Congress Would Establish "Manufacturing Universities"

A bipartisan bill that would designate 25 manufacturing universities across the country and give each one  $20 million over four years to step up advanced manufacturing in engineering programs was introduced Wednesday in Congress by lawmakers, including U.S. Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis).

U.S. Department of Education approves ESEA Flexibility Renewal for five states through expedited decision process

The U.S. Department of Education announced today that North Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, Minnesota and  New Mexico have each received a four-year re newal for flexibility from provisions of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, also known as No Child Left Behind, according to a released statement.
Employers Are Integral to Career-Tech Programs

No longer called "voc ed" or considered an alternative pathway just for struggling students, today's career and technical education programs aim to prepare students of all academic levels for the option of entering the workforce or going to college. In keeping with a national standards framework for CTE, such programs increasingly are centered on broad career clusters, rather than training for specific jobs.

2015 Brown Center Report on American Education: How Well Are American Students Learning?

The 2015 Brown Center Report (BCR) represents the 14th edition of the series since the first issue was published in 2000.  It includes three studies.  Like all previous BCRs, the studies explore independe nt topics but share two characteristics: they are empirical and based on the best evidence available.  The studies in this edition are on the gender gap in reading, the impact of the Common Core State Standards -- English  Language Arts on reading achievement, and student engagement.

The first annual Public Libraries and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) Conference will take place August 20 - 22, 2015 in Denver, Colorado.The Conference's main goal is to create opportunities for public library professionals, STEM professionals and funders to get to know each other and to build productive relationships.

Thinkerella's FIRST Mandeville Workshop!

Thinkerella, a first-of-its-kind educational program for children in New Orleans, has opened a new location in Mandeville and is hosting a grand opening Launch Workshop for kids on Saturday, April 11th at 4011 Highway 59, Suite D. The Uptown New Orleans based company, founded by mompreneur Cherie Melancon Franz, inspires local children through hands-on learning to become the next generation of makers, doers, builders, shapers and inventors.

The Dow Chemical Company (NYSE:DOW) announced today a $1 million commitment with  FIRST? (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) to promote STEM education. As part of Dow's STEMtheGAP? initiative, today's announcement is aligned to the Company's STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) mission of building the workforce of tomorrow by supporting teachers, motivating student achievement, developing careers, and collaborating with communities to transform STEM education into a driver for innovation, manufacturing, and economic prosperity.
  

 
Building the Manufacturing Workforce of the Future
Honda North America, Inc., today announced an innovative $1 million Ohio-based workforce development initiative to create interest in manufacturing careers and provide educational and training opportunities to prepare the next generation workforce for high-tech positions in the manufacturing industry.
   
 
SEVP Releases 2015 International Student Data, Launches Interactive Mapping Tool
SEVIS by the Numbers," a quarterly report on international students studying in the United States, was released Wednesday by the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP), part of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's (ICE) Homeland Security Investigations (HSI). The report highlights February 2015 data from the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS), a Web-based system that includes information about international students, exchange visitors and their dependents while they are in the United States.
