Ontario Sailing's "Sailing Strategies and Tactics Workshop"

Clubs... here is an off-season workshop that you can host at your club. Call Glenn at Ontario Sailing to book (details below).

For individuals, we will host sessions online and at the clubs. The schedule for both will be posted in the next two weeks and sent out by ENewsletter, Facebook and Twitter.

Sessions will be run by Thomas Fogh.  Thomas a former member of the National Team, fresh off the Pan Am Games and is a fully certified coach with Sail Canada.

Content of the sessions will include:
  1. Sail Shape and tuning
  2. Race Strategy
  3. Spinnaker Sailing
  4. Q & A session

The layout is based on two formats.  One is a day-long workshop attended in person; the second is delivered over two online workshops (the subject matter split into two sections).  We would assume that for distance-challenged locations, the second option is best.

The session uses North Racing Tactics by Bill Gladstone available for purchase (fee TBD once we get the new pricing).

Fees:

Online sessions:

$90.00 plus HST for non- members

$75.00 plus HST for members of Ontario Sailing member clubs

In-person sessions (includes book and food):

$115.00 plus HST for non- members

$100.00 plus HST for members

Sail Canada AGM & Conference Report!

The Sail Canada AGM was held in Ottawa from October 29th to 31st, 2015.

The AGM included a number of additional meetings for Provincial Coaches that ran on Wednesday, October 28th.  There was also an Advanced Race Management Seminar and a Regional/National Judge Seminar that ran during the week.

The Executive Directors of the ten Provinces and Sail Canada's ED, Paddy Boyd, also met during the week (this was the largest turn out of EDs in many years).  There were sessions run during the conference to update members and clubs on programs such as CANSail, Ontario Sailing's COAST program, Social Media, Transport Canada update and the list goes on.

Ontario was represented by President Mark Searle, VP Graham Fraser and Board Member Peter Bradley.  In addition, Learning Facilitators Rob Lytle, Ashley Lewis, Mary Catherine Dorn, and Cruising Chair Jamie Gordon all attended the meetings.  Staff coaches  Chris Hewson and Chris Cowan along with ED Glenn Lethbridge were also in attendance.

The AGM was held on Saturday, October 31st with the following outcomes:
  • The membership adopted some wording and organizational changes to the Sail Canada Bylaws.
  • The audited financial statement was approved along with reports from the Provinces.
  • The election of officers then took place.
  •  Todd Irving was acclaimed as the new Incoming President. Todd, a past president of Ontario Sailing, is a member of RCYC.
  • Karen McRae was elected to the Board of Directors. Karen is a member of RCYC. A tidbit on Karen; she was my first Sailing Instructor in 1975 at the HHC Sailing School starting me on a very long road as a sailor, instructor and full time staff person!
  •  Bob Greenhalgh was elected to the Board of Directors. Bob is a member of the Maple Leaf Fund (a former member of Humber College Sailing Club that recently closed their doors). Bob was a key volunteer for the Sailing event at the Pan AM Games.

We would like to thank outgoing board members Christine Searle and John Kerr for their outstanding commitment to the Sport of Sailing.
