April at The Galaxy Bookshop
It's Spring! Galaxy ClassicNo matter that there is still snow on the ground. The days are longer, the air is warming, and soon (maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon...) there will be green things growing and gardens being dug and the feeling of dirt on bare feet and hands. While we're waiting, there are books to be read--books to take our minds off of the weather and drop us into other places, other lives, and other ways of thinking. Come visit us at The Galaxy Bookshop, where you're sure to find just the right story for your spring reading.
Our New Website
After much discussion about the pros and cons of our website, we made the decision to move to a whole new format and platform. We hope you will find our new website welcoming and easy to navigate. You will notice that we no longer have a shopping cart or searchable database, and we no longer sell Kobo e-Books. However, you can still place orders online for books and gift certificates using the simple order form provided on our site.
What else will you find? To our minds, the most important features of our website have always been our events calendar and our staff picks pages, and those are still there, along with links to local authors and information about store programs and incentives.
Browse galaxybookshop.com (no "www,") and let us know what you think! Feedback is welcome.

April is National Poetry Month
Find out how you can participate in the month-long celebration of poetry at poets.org. From the Dear Poet project to Poem in Your Pocket Day, this is a great jumping-off point for learning about Poetry Month events nationwide.
Of course, there will be many local events celebrating poetry, as well, including our Poetry Open Mic Night (read on below for more information.) Here are a few we've heard about - check local calendar listings for even more events in the region:
  • St. Johnsbury, with coordination between Catamount Arts and the Northeast Storytellers, is hosting PoemTown, with readings and workshops taking place throughout the month.

  • The Art House in Craftsbury is hosting two Open Mic Nights, on April 10 & 17 in their new location, the Masonic Hall in Craftsbury Village.

  • Sun Dog Poetry Center is kicking off the Poets and their Craft Lecture Series with Sydney Lea at the Norwich Bookstore on April 3rd. The Galaxy will host David Budbill in May, and other events will take place through the year at bookstores around the state.
And, next time you're in, take a look in our poetry section, featuring many local as well as nationally known poets. There are also a number of wonderful poetry collections to be found in the children's section. We have been carefully cultivating and curating our selection, and we hope you'll enjoy browsing.

We invite you to share your original poetry with other local poets and poetry lovers at our Open Mic Night. Each poet will be given 6-8 minutes to read, depending on the number of participants. All ages are welcome! Whether you've been writing poetry for many years or have just begun, this is a great opportunity to read your poems aloud to an appreciative audience.

Vermont's Table Speaker Series at Sterling College:
Author Fred Kirschenmann
Wednesday, April 22, 6 p.m.

Fred Kirschenmann, author of Cultivating an Ecological Conscience, will speak on the topic "Practical Strategies for Anticipating Future Food and Agriculture Challenges" at Sterling College on Earth Day, April 22nd.
In the coming decades farmers and food entrepreneurs are likely to encounter many new challenges, including increasing input costs, unstable climates, and depleting natural resources. How can we begin to anticipate such changes, prepare for them and use them as opportunities to design a more resilient, regenerative food and agriculture system?
This event is free and will take place in Simpson 3. Books will be available for sale by The Galaxy Bookshop. For more information, call 586-7711, ext. 164.

A few of the gems you'll find in our poetry sections:

Please check out Deep Lane, the new collection by National Book Award winner Mark Doty.

For children, since it never too early to begin to cultivate a love of poetry, try Shirley Hughes' new book Out and About: A First Book of Poems.
